Question CD Recording Software disabled

Earlier this year I installed a CD-RW drive in my XP Home system. The drive was second hand and a bit old - a HP 7100 Series drive. For some reason the drive had some kind of incompatibility with XP and the built-in recording software never worked although HP RecordNow and DLA worked properly and I could create CDs without problems.

However, every time the system started up, a small popup window came up telling that the CD recording software was disabled because it could cause the system to become unstable. I just lived with it.

About two weeks ago the CD-RW drive died and I got a new one which works great and is very fast. The old HP software didn't work with this drive so I uninstalled it. The built-in Windows recording software suddenly came back to life and I can create new CDs right from Explorer. The bundled software works great too.

BUT (there's always a BUT), the little popup window still shows up at startup.

Why? How can I fix this?

The software left something behind in the registry, you could do a search for it in the registry(use regedit) and delete it.

this one is for xp

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1011/

Also read this:
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/driver/drv_protect.asp

Driver Protection List for Windows XP

This section lists all drivers in the Driver Protection List that are known to cause stability problems in Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home Edition, as of Windows XP RTM. An updated version of the Driver Protection List will be available in the future at

http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/.

If the operating system attempts to load one of these drivers, Driver Protection will find a match in the Driver Protection List and prevent the operating system from loading the driver.

I would be willing to bet that it is the software/driver from 'DirectCD' that has been attempted to be installed on the computer. I have the same problem on my computer, but since I leave mine on all the time I have just about forgot about it. I didnt look to much for the driver or registry intree that causes this. Wouldnt mind knowing exactly what to delete to get it to stop doing that myself.

I found one DirectCD driver in my system that was listed in the protected drivers list. Renamed the file and the problem seems to be fixed. But there are a couple of references to it in the registry. Should I remove them?

I know this has been hashed over time and time again, but it's one of those funny things that i can't seem to find a definite asnwer for. Does anyone have a definite solution? In this particular case, i did a clean install of XP for a friend, and i am getting that annoying bubble when i start up. I had installed Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4 and then uninstalled it, and installed DirectCD. But still the annoying pop up. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok so i got that handled, deleted the drivers for that program, and now neither the cd rw or the dvd rom show up in the computer. Finding the proper driver for this rw is a damn pain in the buttocks. Nothing on the samsung site or anything, it's a 248f drive. Anyone know where i can get one? I have combed the internet for one, and nothing.

Wrnchhead76, you have me confused. There are no drivers for CD rom, DVD rom's or burners. XP will recognize them and assign the driver native in XP. You should see them in the Device Manager. You need software, not drivers, to burn CD's or DVD's. Something like Easy CD Creator (junk) or Nero (great stuff) New burners come with software for that drive. All my Liteon CD RW drives came with Nero.

The pop up is most likely left over program frags from the previously installed software. Do a search for anything Adaptec, Roxio, or Easy CD creator and delte them. Also, if you do use Nero, get rid of the Direct CD software too. Direct CD is packet writing software for drag and drop situations where you use your burner like a floppy. Nero's comparable software to Direct CD is In CD. NEVER allow the two on the same machine. They do not get along.

Did you try rebooting? The system should recognize new hardware.
