Install problems
Hi, I recently built a new system and I am having troubles getting Win XP to install. After the system posts it goes to a DOS screen and just sits there with the prompt flashing. I think I need to install my DVD driver first so it will read the OS set-up disk but I don't know what DOS command to use to get the DVD driver to install. Of course none of the manuals are any help. Maybe someone here can give me some ideas?

Hi AtariForever,
Make sure the IDE cables are installed properly and the jumpers set correctly for the hard drives and optical drives (CD-ROM, DVD, CD-RW). Check to see that the drives are recognized by the BIOS. Red stripe on the IDE cable oriented towards pin 1 on the motherboard and hard drive connectors. If you're using a normal 40 wire IDE cable on the DVD, set the jumper to master or slave. It doesn't matter which IDE connector the drive is connected to. If you're using a 80 wire UltraATA IDE cable, set the drive jumper to CS (cable select) and put the blue connector to the motherboard, the black connector to the drive you want as master and the grey connector to the drive you want as slave. Hey Cricket! I will double check my cables when I get home, but I think they are OK. Where do I check in the BIOS to see if my drives are detected?

Hi AtariForever,
You'll see if the BIOS recognizes the drives in the first boot screen while your system is starting up. Or you can check the Standard CMOS Setup screen while in BIOS. Cricket

If you have set the BIOS to boot from the CD-Rom (or in your case DVD) drive and start with your XP CD-Rom in the tray, you will get a message on the screen indicating that any key must be pressed in order to boot from the CD-Rom drive.
The message appears quickly; so you must hit a key quickly or else the PC will try to boot from the HD. If this happens, then you have to restart the PC and try again. As you are arriving at the C: prompt (the PC is trying to boot from the HD), that's what I think is happening. HTH Last edited by mike breck; 09-24-2002 at 10:49 AM. |

Thanks alot Mr. Breck! Appearently I was looking elsewhere (in the case, in the manual, to the heavens, wherever) but not at the screen. All is working fine now!

Glad you got it running AtariForever.
BTW Mike will do nicely. Only my wife and children are trained to call me "Mr. Breck".
