Win Xp: Has a word p. +spell check?
Customer is buying 7 new PC's for a reservation network, only needs to type the odd letter, and doesn't want to
buy 7 separate copies of MSWord etc. if its unneccesary. Does XP Home have something like a Wordpad with spell check, and a few popular fonts like Times New Roman? You'd think their site would tell you ! If not, whats the simplest/cheapest available ? Thanks ! |

WordPad would have all of the fonts that are installed on the system but no spell check. You can get one of the free office suites or buy Works2002/3 which comes with Word for about $100.

Have to second the Works deal.
"Works Suite brings together the full versions of Microsoft Word, Works, Money Standard, Encarta Standard, Picture It! Photo, and Streets & Trips all in one, easy to use package. " (Pulled from MS site) All this for a price of 109.00 from MS and probably cheaper if you hunt around. The full version of Word is 339.00 from MS and 79.00for the upgrade. Works is a great product for the non "power" home user, pretty much covers all of the things people expect to do with a PC. |

Forget about Works. Just get an OEM version of Corel Suite version 8 on Ebay for about $10 each. Much better than Works or Office, IMO.

I have works and it crashes my computer every time that I use it.... I would give OpenOffice a chance.... I think you can open documents that were written in Word with it....

If it is for a business, you are pretty nearly locked into using Word. If you don't, then there will be documents sent out that no one else can read. I use StarOffice at home and like it overall but it won't by default open Excel files (you have to open the Spreadsheet and then find the file and open it) and always wants to save them with a .sdc extension.

Our travel agency cannot afford $100 x 7 copies = $700, just to type a few letters. Its a rip off anyway- don't need spreadsheets, calendars or other 'productivity tools ". You cant get away with loading one OEM CD onto 7 PC's nowadays: a phoneup registration is required for each, and I'm to old to play games , let alone 7 games.
I'm going to try the OpenOffice and then the Corel Wordperfect although I have memories of the early versions that were infuriating. Mairvings compatibility warning is worrying. Is that a problem with Corel too ? Failing all else there is always the vintage, registration nagfree, version 1.0? of MSWorks. Sincere thanks for your thoughts. |
