Old PC boots up into DOS

Hoprfully this is a simple question, but it is beyond me....I just set up an old 75 mgh Pent I gateway computer for my inlaws at a second home. They only want to use it to go into the internet, check e-mail, and play solitaire. They SWEAR that, when they used to use it (last time about 2 years ago), that it had WINDOWS 95, had internet access, etc.

It is all setup properly, but when it starts up, it is in DOS mode at the "C" prompt. Is there anyway I can get it to go into Windows 95, or startup in Windows 95 (or even check that it has Windows 95)?

Sorry if this is really a dumb question, but I am new at all this.

Thanks

At the C:\ prompt, type WIN and if it's got Windows, it'll go.
Also, at the c:\ prompt, type DIR and see if there's lots of stuff on it or not, particularily a Windows folder with tons of things in there.

Reboot! Thanks for the info. I will go out there this weekend and try. I'm sure you are right.

I am really glad that you are the person who answered, because I have a question for you on ShopVac. I asked it before, but I lost your answer (getting old is a pain). Anyway, I am in Dos and want to run shopvac, but the prompt I am at is C:>windows. I know I have to get the "windows" out of there, but I can't remember the command. I know---how stupid...Thank you...

To get to the root directory on C:\ from C:\Windows, just type:

"CD .." (without the quotes).

The double-dot means go to the parent directory from wherever you are, and will eventually, always get you to C:\ not matter where you start.

Hope that helps,

David.

PS: Good to know that Re-boot is still around, I thought you might have retired!

Just terribly busy for a while. Now I'm in the ranks of the unemployed, lazy, stay-at-home-and-play-games, answer stuff on here people.
