fqpissed Here's a weird one

I have recently loaded windows 98se on a new hard drive.
It has been running fine for the past couple of days.
Now, whenever I start the computer my dial up networking dials up my isp. No brower opens, only the modem connects. It also does this when I go to shut the computer down.
I have went into msconfig and shut everything off, except:
scan registry
task monitor
system tray
NAV agent (anit virus, I believe)
SchedulingAgent
ScriptBlocking
Data Lifeguard

Any ideas??

Hi fc3646,

Could be spyware. Scan your system with Ad-Aware by Lavasoft.

Could also be a trojan. Scan your system with The Cleaner by MooSoft.

Could it have something to do with NAV's LiveUpdate?

From Symatec's support site:
Situation:
You installed Norton AntiVirus 2002 (NAV) and may have run LiveUpdate. When you restart the computer, your dial-up connection repeatedly prompts you to connect to the Internet. This also occurs during shutdown. You must click Cancel repeatedly to stop the process. Sometimes you may need to connect briefly to the Internet to stop the process.

Solution:
This problem has been reported to Symantec Technical Support, but we have not been able to reproduce the problem. We will continue to track this problem, and this document will be updated if new information becomes available or a solution is found.

It then refers you to MS KB Article Q316530

Start > Run > type msconfig and under the Start tab check how many programs you have starting along with Win98. Perhaps one of them is the culprit. Post back.

I did check in msconfig and the only thing I can see that it may be is Norton AV. Here is what is running:
scan registry
task monitor
system tray
NAV agent
SchedulingAgent
ScriptBlocking
Data Lifeguard

It's more of an annoyance than anything else.......

Send a message via AIM to ChromWolf
well, here's the suggestion no one else seems to have tried; if you have the pateince to do it, go through each one, and uncheck it, then restart. if it does it, uncheck another one. keep going until its gone; just don't uncheck explorer or systray, of course.. If it still doesn't work, I suppose it's possible there's some funky setting directly with your modem, but I kinda doubt it, I think it's just one of those programs. Once you figure out which one, you might wanna tinker with the program's options and see if there's some strange "auto-dial" option or something. However, I would start out with turning off Norton AV, first off, like Miz suggested... Post back, interested in hearing what happens..

Nice call, ChromWolf. I have used that method sometimes and it seldom fails to expose the culprit.

If you install a Firewall like ZoneAlarm

http://www.zonealarm.com/

That will tell which program is trying to connect to the Net.

I think it's probably NAV, but it's as well to check.
