W2K & XP dubal boot question

Hi!

This is the first time that I will do to have dual boot of W2K and XP but im not sure of the partition thats why I need your expertise on this matter before I proceed.

I formatted my HD to C:\ NTFS Primary partition where W2K has been installed.

the D:\ has been formatted also as NTFS in where I intend to install XP

When I check from W2K Disk management, the system says C:\ has been formatted as Primary partition and D:\ is also Primary partition.

Question :

Can I install XP on drive D:\ or I have to format drive D:\ to be logical drive??

thanks for the input.

Regards,

So if you just formated the D: drive there is nothing on it right. If this is true then just boot from the XP CD and you will be able to install it on the D: drive just fine. If for some reason you cant the XP set up will tell you that you need to reformat the D: drive and will also do it for you.

Re:

thanks for your reply. So it does not matter if its formatted as primary or logical drive in extended partition.

Nope. As long as C is bootable (it is), XP will install anywhere you want it to.

Forgive me for maybe asking a stupid question but why have a Windows2000 and WindowsXP dual boot setup?

According to anything I've read, Windows2000 and WindowsXP are near identical and the differences are merely cosmetic.

I might be wrong, just wondering.

Glad someone asked, I wasn't going to. It does seem redundant though.

They are pretty much the same, but I think that XP has better driver support.
