losing disc space mysteriously!!!

Hi,
I have a 2 gig hard drive which is losing space without me actually downloading etc.
I have deleted cookies, temporary files and programmes I dont use much plus other valuable material.
I have added all my M.B's used and they total 1050,my drive says I have 170 left,on other occasions it says lower than that even when I havent added anything to it.
today I was on line for 1 hour just checking through comp to see if there was anything I could delete,I lost 20kb,I hadnt deleted anything or added anything.
Could anyone please help me ?

Hi and welcome to PCMech Trixey3122!

What OS do you have?... How many programs do you have running in the background (to find out hit Alt-Control-Delete once)?... Could just be normal usage, but....

We would be glad to help... but just need a little more info about your computer and such...

Hi Trixey3122,

You have definitely cleaned out your Temporary Internet Files and C:\Windows\Temp folders? What about your History folder?

When you uninstall programs from your PC, do you use Windows Add/Remove Programs OR third party software like Norton's Cleansweep.

If you use a third party program like Cleansweep (which does a much better job than Windows at removing programs), it will make a compressed backup of the program during uninstallation.
These backups really mount up and should be deleted regularly.

Are you using any other programs which may be backing up folders or files?

Run a full Scandisk on your Hard Drives in case there is an HD error that is mis-reporting your free space. I have come across this a few times.

Also do a complete defrag of the HD.

BTW as soon as you go online and view a page it is added to the Temporary Internet File Cache (folder) and uses HD space.

Losing disc space mysteriously

Hi,
May I thank the two people who have tried to help me with my problem.
However, there has been a change in the problem I have,my son came home and looked at it and he had the idea to display the hidden files this in turn bought up a Restore folder in C drive, and the properties reports this as 1.11gb in size.
So I now know where my space is but does anyone know how I can reclaim it back without damaging my computer or anything.

I think I forgot to mention that I am using windows ME.

Thankyou for your help

Right Click "My Computer" choose properties | performance | File System | Troubleshooting and then put a check mark in disable system restore. You will be asked to reboot and it will clear those files. The problem now is you can no longer use system restore to fix problems. The other possibility is to give system restore less room. You can do this by right clicking "My Computer" and choosing properties | performance | File System and sliding the System restore disk space bar to minimum. This will allow system restore to function, but will use much less space.
