.chk file extensions ?...

I have been having probs with my main (C) drive and having temporarily sorted them out (awaiting a replacement), I had a look at my D drive and noticed that all the files and folders on it had changed to .chk extensions and I can't view or open them.

HELP !

These were created by your last run of Scandisk.

It found what it "thought" were lost file fragments and because you ran with automatically fix errors, it did exactly that. Unfortunately, it was not the correct fix.

This is why you should NEVER run with automatically fix set.

Now, you really have but one choice. If there is information there that is critical that you save, take the PC or drive to a Data Recovery company.

Consider yourself somewhat "lucky". If you had run with automatically fix, AND delete Lost File Fragments you would have had NADA on your disk.
Again, if you shut it down and didn't touch the file system, the data recovery people could recover your data for you.

Hi magicdog,

If you have important data on that HD that you "really" need try
PowerQuest's Lost and Found. Even if you have to buy the program it will be considerably cheaper than going to professional recovery specialists.

If you skim read this rather complicated Post you will see that Howie managed to sucessfully recover his data using this program. There are no guarantees tho.
