Question Computer freezing when trying to play DVD

Hi, my friend is having a problem playing DVD's on the system I built for her for college. She is running Windows XP Pro, with a Lite-On 16x/48x DVD-drive. The mobo is an ECS K7VTA3 ver. 2 with 256 mb DDR ram. The computer completely locks up when trying to play the DVD on either Windows Media Player or PowerDVD XP. She said that the movie will play until it gets to the DVD menu where you can select Play, Special Features, etc. Once she clicks Play, the system completely freezes and a restart is needed. She's using a GeForce2 MX400 with 32 mb ram for the video card. Any help is a appreciated! Oh, the dvd drive reads other discs just fine (i.e music and data cds). Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure, but this sounds like a decoder problem and is conflicting with XP. Try powerDVD 4 and that might work

brentconn, PowerDVD 4 *is* PowerDVD XP

Is hardware accelleration enabled ? If so, disable it and see if it works.
Also upgrading the graphic drivers might help.

i had a similar problem and i performed boot cleanup.
run ->MSCONFIG->general->selectivestartup->uncheck boot.ini,win.inietc except load startup items.
-under services, uncheck 'hide all microsoft services' and 'disable all'
-under 'start up', select unwanted applications
restart. when few applications conflict , it might freeze the system. trying this might solve the problem.
