Hi Gang,
Have seen similar threads to this, but none that seemed relevant to my situation. I am running Win2K, Supermicro P3DME MoBo with 1GigSDRAM, Dual 933MHz P3's (Slot 1). The system has run real well for the past year. I would have periodic lock ups that were mildly troublesome, but rebuilt and reformatted/clean installed and haven't had any trouble till recently. The periodic/random lock ups were occuring more frequently and now can't even preform simple virus scan in Safe Mode!!! I have removed the sides of the case thinking it is heat related, but no go there! Any thoughts or troubleshooting is greatly appreciated! THANKS! Larry |

Hi
Does it occur when running specific programs or when it's just idle also?... What kind of power supply do you have?... maybe it's going bad... could be a bad stick o'sdram, so you could pull out one stick at a time and see if the lock-up/freezing still occurs... good luck |

Thanks Cuffs007!
I have pulled one CPU and the system worked fine. Then swapped the other CPU and so far so good, so I think it's a heat issue. Gonna blow of all the dust balls and the like and hopefully I'll be back up and running in no time!! I'll keep ya posted!!! |

that's cool... if you dont think its a power supply prob, then a good cleaning inside the case could work... those dust balls can wreak some havoc once in a while... especially if they clog up any case/power/cpu fans!... yuck.
good luck once again |

Have you checked yet to see what the temp is, are all cables out of the way or tied togethor, whats the temp in the room you have it in? Dont judge it buy taking the covers off though, that is how the air gets circulated.

Thus far I have run the box with either CPU in the first slot, but not with both. This is a Slot 1 MoBo and there is very little clearance between the fans on the first heatsink and the second CPU. I have replaced the heatsink/fan assembly on one CPU to something that is a little more streamlined. Haven't tried it yet, but my guess is this hould work!
I'll let you all know as soon as I am able to check it out! THANKS All! Larry |

hi lj!
most of the times the problems could be software related. try doing system restore(start-programs-accessories-system tools-system retore) and change it to the date when it ws working fine. -try boot cleanup (-run-MSCONFIG-general-selective startup- except load startup items uncheck all -under services-disable all -under start up, uncheck uneanted applications *sometimes more than one application will try to occupy a single memory location and would lock up the computer.boot cleanup eradicates this problem. |
