At the Welcome screen hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice then enter "Administrator" or the name in case you have changed the default Admin name then the password.

How can you tell, if your already logged on, if you are logged in as administrator?

XP PRO has a default Administrator and then users of a PC by default have Administrator privileges. You can change the privileges to “limited” in the user accounts in the control panel. If your account has admin rights then you can change, modify and install programs if it is limited then you just have basic use of the PC, but if I remember correctly the limited user can still access regedit which is not good. This issue may have been taken care of with XP SP1, but I have to try it again. In the case where I had one user account that had admin rights I could not perform a certain task (which I’m still trying to remember just what it was) I could with the default Admin account.

so......if there was only one user then that person would automatically be the administrator, and there would be no need to log on any other way?

For the most part however there may be a time where your user account has become corrupt and XP will not log you in you will have to use the default Admin account to log on.

Well, I log into my college's network from my dorm room, but i needed to get into my acutal computer since it doesn't let you if you are logged in. That's why I needed the admin. rights.
