big problem reinstalling windows 98
I was operating on windows 2k professional and had problems after I added a new mobo and chip, so I decided to do a clean sweep and reinstall the OS. Since I only have an update cd to windows 2k, I grabbed my full 98 cd and began to reinstall. I was asked if I wanted it wiped clean and reformatted, I did that and now when I reboot and go to the setup it asks to insert the windows boot disk or cd-rom. I have the cd rom in and it won't reconize it, I get a beep, and quick message that says formatting error 0% of drive c formatted, before it returns to please insert thew following disk in drive d (oy your cd-rom drive). Being new to building a pc let alone installing an operating system would anyone have any advice?

Yes i think i can help you.. it would be best to start from scratch.
Chnage the bios to boot to cd-rom first,, Quote from glc Don't bother fdisking and formatting or messing with 98 - just boot with the 2k CD and do a clean install - let the 2k setup wipe your partitions out and make a new one - and when it reaches the point in the install where it's looking for a qualifying OS to upgrade from, just stick the 98 CD in the other optical drive and point the compliance check to its \win98 folder. If it doesn't see the other optical, just remove the 2k CD and replace it with the 98 CD in the drive you are using. Clean installs of 2k always work better than upgrading over 98 and this method will alow you to satisfy the upgrade requirements without having to actually install the old OS. HTH zaney123
