I have been reading threads regarding this issue all day (few on ME most on XP) and have gotten no where fixing my problem. I'm having a problem with my video capture card. Whenever I attempt to open the capture program or even Windows Movie Maker the computer reboots. I've determined through research this is a consistent problem when the capture card shares an IRQ with any other device. My IRQ's were full, though I went in and disabled the serial ports and this freed up 4 and 9. In CMOS I disabled the option "PNP OS installed" and set the IRQ settings to Manual. The two choices there are PCI/ISA PNP and Legacy ISA. By default are on (still) PCI/ISA PNP.
I've tried moving the video capture card to all of the three empty PCI slots, though it's always sharing the IRQ with at least one sometimes four other devices. If I go into Device Manager and attempt to change the IRQ for the capture card - I uncheck the "Use Automatic Settings," cannot change the Basic Configuration 0000 (this is the only config available). When trying to change the IRQ I get the message "This resource setting cannot be modified." It will allow me to change the memory range though I don't believe (don't know) that this would accomplish anything positive. I've also tried changing the IRQ settings of the devices sharing with the capture card but get the same message "resource cannot be changed." I have a K7VAT m/b with Tbird 1 ghz proc, 512 ram, 2 hdd's on IDE 1, CD-rom and CDRW on IDE 2, Voodoo 5500 AGP vid card, onboard sound VIA AC'97. All I have on the capture card is: H.32xPCI Driver by VideoCad Ltd. Release 1.38 (which seems to be the only and latest driver). Using Windows ME IRQ used Resources are as follow: 00 System Timer 01 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard 02 Programmable interrupt controller 03 SCI IRQ used by ACPI Bus 05 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering 05 H.32x PCI 05 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller 05 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering 05 VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller 06 Standard Floppy Disk Controller 07 Printer Port (LPT 1) 08 System CMOS/real time clock 10 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering 10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering 10 3dfx voodoo series 11 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering 11 Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (LNE100TXv4) 11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering 11 VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM) 12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port 13 Numeric data processor 14 Via Bus Master PCI IDE Controller 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo) 15 Via Bus Master PCI IDE Controller 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo) Final thing I can think of is this site I found regarding the capture card indicating this was a common problem. http://www2.driverguide.com/uploads/uploads7a/5832.html Thanks in advance for any help you may offer, Route66_2K |

You've done all the right things, except for one step.
Now that you've disabled the onboard serial ports, some devices have moved in to take those IRQ's, but ... I would set the IRQ's back to automatic in BIOS, boot to safe mode, and remove everything from device manager. A restart will reinstall all the hardware. If things are still shared where you don't want them, the easy way is to pull all hardware except the video card, get it installed correctly, then add one peripheral at a time. Each device should then take a separate IRQ. There is one other way, go into Device manager, system devices, IRQ steering, and disable it. After a restart things may not quite work correctly, but you can go back and put a tick mark in the "Use MS IRQ steering table" to sort it out. |

I had tried going into Device Manager - System devices - PCI Bus - IRQ Steering and disabling it - this did nothing. From what I see the problem is the multiple ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering and IRQ Holder for PCI Steering, though I have no clue what those do.
For a temporary fix I did get the video capture card to work. I went into CMOS and disabled anything to do with ACPI. I lost pretty much everything in Device manager and only had 16 colors on my display but it worked. There were 4 "unknown devices" occupying seperate IRQ's and I guess 1 was the capture card. It took quite a while, after I re-enabled the ACPI functions to get all the items reloaded (BIG MESS). But now I'm back to where I started, shared IRQ's and no capture card function. I've removed the hardware, though when I reinsert them something always jumps on the IRQ with the capture card. Thanks for your input reboot!! |

Welcome to ME...that's about all I can say.
Time to troubleshoot one at a time. Remove all PCI devices from device manager (video, modem, whatever), restart, go into BIOS. Set the slot the capture card is in to manual, Legacy ISA, assign it an IRQ. Restart and let Windows sort it out. If it's still shared, go back and assign a different IRQ for it, restart. Repeat if necessary. |
