freezes
I'm not sure if this is the proper forum but here goes..... my computer has been experiencing lock ups that last from 1sec to 30 secs where the mouse and keyboard freeze and whatever I am running also freezes. I ran every virus/trojan/bot analyser I know of and they all come up as clean. Also, I've defragged and run scandisk. All with no errors. The system runs cool, cpu=41 c, board =26 c, power supply= 28 c. This is a dual boot setup with 98se and XP home. These lock ups also occur in XP. Except for these lockups, the PC has had no problems.
My system specs are: EPOX 8k7a (no raid) AMD 1.2 tbird 256 Mb micron DDR pc2100 WD 30 Gb ata 100 5400 rpm ATi radeon 7500 ultra Hercules Game theater XP 6.1 Intel pro 100 NIC Any help would be appreciated as I'm tearing my hair out trying to find out what's up with this PC. Aalso, feel free to move this thread to the appropriate forum if this is not the right one. |

I've done that and it takes a bit longer for the freezes to start. But they still start.

Seems like a memory problem to me. How many sticks does that system has?

A combination of too many apps, not enough RAM, or bad RAM.
I've found that XP runs really nice with 512 meg or more, although 98 should run best at around 340 meg. |

This box has 1 stick of micron pc2100 ddr 256 Mgb. On another note, I found that by using a different mouse, the problem almost dissappears. The mouse I was using is a MS Intellimouse optical ps2/usb model. and I had it plugged into the ps2. I tried an old intellimouse (nonoptical) andthe problem almost stops. It freezes for a few secs duration for the first 15mins or so of PC operation. BTW, I do turn off my PC at night.
I hope these few more details might help. And thanks to all who have responded so far. |

Hi onearmpprhngr,
Do you have the specific mouse driver for that MS Intellimouse installed or are you just using the generic mouse driver built into XP? If you're using the Intellimouse drivers, maybe they need to be updated. When the first MS optical mice appeared, they had really buggy drivers that would mess up systems. People would uninstall them and just use the generic drivers and all was well. I'm not sure how the current drivers work...I always use the generic mouse driver. Cricket

Hmm, I'm using the generic one from 98se and from XP. I've always used the generic one with no issues, maybe I'll load the MS ones that came with the mouse and see what that produces.
Thanks for the input cricket. On the RAM idea, I just tried a new stick of RAM (Kingston pc2100 cas 2.5) and the problem still persists. (And yes, I tried it by itself . )
