System Monitor

I'm running Win 98 SE with 256 MB RAM. When I run System Monitor the bar chart for Memory Manager, Unused Physical Memory always shows about 146 MB. Exactly what does this mean? Is it good or bad? Does it mean that the rest of the physical memory, 110 MB, is in use even though there are no major programs running, only a few background programs?

Thanks for any answers that will help educate me.

Yes, Windows tends to suck memory real good even when you have no more than one or two major programs running.

I have 256 and sometimes it drops to 14 MB while using Word, Outlook Express, three windows of IE 5.5 and Winamp.

WHen you see something like this in the Windows 98 System Monitor, follow these instructions.

1. Right Click on the System Monitor Icon.
2. Select "Exit System Monitor."
3. Go back to doing something else on your computer that you enjoy.
4. Never open the System Monitor again as it really doesn't tell you anything of importance.

The first thing I do after installing Windows in a new machine is disabling System Monitor.
