Greetings From Texas
My Screen is full of Icons. There ot'a be a click on that would bring up a page 2 desk top that is blank and would let me put more Icons on. Once #2 desktop is full,Ican go to a fresh #3 Desk Top. There would be click on icon running in the tray that would let me go to any of the Desk Top's I wanted. I know,I could make a folder and put it on the desk top and drag the excess Icons in,but that doesn't look exactly like the same desk top. I hope I explained it right to you what I mean. Is there a program for what I need.---------------Donald |

IMO, you shouldn't have so many icons on your screen...
you can always make the screen resolution higher (if it's not already at its limit) and that will give you more desktop space. Have you considered putting your shortcuts in your programs menu? It makes things much cleaner. You can either drag&drop them directly to the programs menu, or you can goto "c:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Start Menu\Programs" and add the shortcuts there. I actually break things down in the Start Menu for the different types of programs I have: Digital Imaging / Graphics (Adobe Photoshop, 3d Studio Max, etc) Development (VS.NET, Macromedia Studio MX, etc) Office (Microsoft Office XP Pro, etc) Multimedia (WinAMP, Cyberlink Power DVD, etc) Games (Unreal Tournament, Quake III Arena, Ultima Online etc) ... You can add more of course. I find this method to be much more clean and effective, as you are not looking at a jumble of icons... and you can quickly get to whatever you're looking for and still have a nice clean desktop to look at. Especially if you have a cool wallpaper. You want to be able to show it off. |

I dont know if http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p.../powertoys.asp (virtual desktop manager) will do the trick for you, havent used it, but its worth a try. In addition your video card mfger probably has a utility for virtual desktops, check their site or their cd.
Its really not a good idea to fill your desktop with files, icons representing shortcuts are ok, but files on your desktop will eventually slow down your performance. Files on your desktop are going to be actively cached when you log in, and eventually you are going to feel the effects of it. |

I run exactly zero icons on my desktop. For the reasons Statica mentioned plus if you are using your computer you can't see the desktop any way. But there are utilities that allow you to do what you want. Matrox Quick Desk comes to mind. It is for Matrox cards but I'm sure every card maker offers something similar. cnet has tons of utilities like this in their download section. Just be aware all of those icons must be refreshed each time the screen refreshes(60-100 per second) and will eat into your machine's capability to do other things.

I also have 0 icons on my desktop because it's a bit more pleasing on my eye's plus the added benifit of performance. Another thing I like to do is add a toolbar to the taskbar for quick access to some apps.

Thanks !
I want to say thanks for all 4 replys. I am going to look into all of them. I might first try and check out Tuf. What he says kind'a cuts to the chase if indeed c-net has something liike what I am looking for and even if they don't there are other places to check out for downloads of that sort. As of now, I have a few folders on my desk top that I drop the ICON short cuts into. I just loveeee, shortcut Icons. Is what I do is to go up to the right top on the Menu bar and hit the dash box and that clears my CompuServe interface splash screen, you know, send it down to the task bar. Then I can search out a shortcut icon that I want. When I click on that Icon it brings CompuServe back up from the task bar along with the page that that icon refers to. Any way --thanks to - lil jimmie---Tuf---Statica---- and j009h33rM3 -------------Donald |

Heh, join the club Donald!
My desktop is crammed full of shortcuts, in addition to having folders with even more shortcuts.

Go into C:\Windows\Start Menu/Programs and put hte programs into Folders. (In Xp/2000 it is under Documents and Settings) the Send the folder to the deaktop as a shortcut. The delete all your old icons.
