Exclamation Comp hangs on startup. Help!

When my comp starts up, it gets to "verifying DMI settings...", "Starting Windows...", two C:/> set paths and 3 "C:/>". It hangs on the 3 "C:/>". The HDD light sometime becomes steady with no audible activity, or sometimes just goes off.

In addition to this, all my icons show up with 256 colors, instead of the 32 bit color setting I have my comp set at. Everything else shows up in 32 bit color, it's only the icons that are showing up in 256 colors.

I also used Xteq Systems X-Setup to not show the "starting windows" picture.

I don't know if these two probs are related, but they are driving me nuts!! I appreciate any help in resolving these problems.

Here are my specs:
Windows 98 SE
ATI Rage II 4MB
Cyrix 6x86MII 300MHz (clocks at 234MHZ)
HSP56 MicroModem
Gigabyte ALADIN5
96MB RAM
OPTi Sound Card
Sony 8x4x32 burner
Lite-on 48x CD-ROM drive
CNet 10/100 Ethernetcard
FUJITSU MPE3136AT 13GB HDD
HPQuantum Maverick 265MB HDD

Hi force_flow2002,

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

Did you install anything new recently (hardware or software)?

How was your system running before this happened?

Did you update anything recently (programs or drivers)?

Cricket

Boot to DOS, and rename autoexec.bat to autoexec.bad and config.sys to config.bad
Restart.

Cricket, Yes, I can boot up in safe mode. I can boot up in normal mode too, after about 5 tries.

I just installed a NIC, and some freeware and shareware progs: (in order of installation) SiSoftware Sandra 2002 Standard, Ad-aware, Spy Checker, Winamp 2, and Musoft Music Generator 3.

My system was running fine up until about a week ago when the hang problem and icon color problem happened.

No, I didn't update anything recently. (not in a long time, actually.)

Reboot, I'll try it, thanks.

I just tried it. My comp doesn't hang anymore, but it does take a little longer to start up. No biggie.

The big, annoying problem that is still present is the icon problem. Help!
