Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM ? ? ?

When I connect another device to the IDE cable that the system drive is on, I get this message, "Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM: Disk Boot Failure, Insert System Disk and press enter".

Whats going on??? Should I clear my master boot record ??? Is there somehting I should set different. This system was booting fine until I put another device on the cable with the system drive.

I just notice: BIOS = Second Boot Device [IDE-0]
WIN2K Device Manager = Disk 0 [RAID IDE]
= Disk 1 [ Drive C - system]
How can I change Disk 0 to be Drive C??

Win2K, 512 RAM, Gigabyte MOB, 222 RAID, 40Gig Maxtor system drive.

Thanks - Henry

normally it is better if you put HD's on one channel and optical's on the other channel.. What are you connecting to the channel and how to you have the jumpers and what part of the cable are you cionnecting it to??

I double check jumper settings on all devices: IDE 1 = Matrox 45 Gb=Master; Generic CD-Rom=Slave, IDE 2 = Matrox 45 GB=Master; Plextor CD-R/RW=Slave; OnBoard Promise RAID IDE 3 & 4.

When it boot from the CD I get this error message, "Disk I/0 error 0002000. I have also used option "R" for the repair disk, which is running now.

If I unplug the CD-Rom as a slave and leave that cable blank the system will boot. I just got it to boot without the CD on the IDE 1 cable. But that limites me to one cd drive.

I'd follow Zaney's advice and put the HDs on the IDE0 and the opticals on IDE1. Try dat and see if you have probs bootin' from the CD.

Hi haptry,

What mobo do you have?

What type of IDE cables are you using on both IDE channels? Standard 40wire/40pin or ATA 66/100 80wire/40pin cables with the black, gray, and blue connectors?

Maxtor recommend the use of the ATA 66/100 cables on their HDs. So, as the other guys have said, you're best arrangement is to put the two HDs on IDE1 with a ATA 66/100 cable and jumper them to Cable Select.

Then put the two Optical devices on IDE2 jumpered as Master and Slave on a standard 40wire/40 pin cable.

How can you tell the difference between a 40 wire and an ATA 80 wire? Well, apart from the colours of the connectors, I have mentioned above, just count the wires on the cable. There should be 40 or 80.

Go into the BIOS and disable any options for RAID and disable any options (if present) for IDE3 and IDE4 . As you are not using RAID or any devices these channels, you don't need IDE3&4.

If this doesn't improve the situation, then change your boot sequence in the BIOS so it will boot from the HD first.

Let us know how you get on.

HTH

I did as suggested, I put the two HDD on IDE 1 and the two CD Rom on IDE 2 - just boot and got the error message, "Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM"

And when I boot from the Win2K cd, I get "Disk I/O error = 00002000"
I am doing the repair cycle again, but that never works.

If you're trying to boot from the HD then change the boot sequence in the BIOS to boot from the HD.

If you're trying to boot from the W2K CD-Rom, then change the boot sequence to boot from CD-Rom first.

Can you try this CD-Rom drive in another PC to see if it's working?

Alternatively, have you got another CD-Rom drive you can try with the current PC to see if that works without giving an error?

From what you're saying you can boot from the W2K CD in the CD-Rom drive - but it throws up a "Disk I/O error = 00002000" - however, you can continue to boot and run Repair from the CD?

Notice that if the system drive "C" has no other device on the cable it will boot into windows. If I put another device on the cable I get trouble.

Changed cable, drives, have another system drive i can use to repalce this one, and still have the same problems.

If I boot from the CD it want to install the Program.

Yes, I have swap the drives I have. and still the same problem.
This system was running good until I installed it in a new case. I ran it out of the case and still had the same problem, removed the memory and still the same problem. I am about to settle for just getting it up and running for now cause I am behind in my projects.

Thanks - Henry

Please confirm that you have followed mike's instructions for jumpering the drives depending on what type cables you are using: master/slave with 40 wire - cable select with 80 wire.
