Don't have win2000 cd,what to do?
What do you do if you have a computer that has win2000 but did not receive the cd?I was gonna download some language support packs but stuck when they asked to put win2000 cd in...and also when your computer case doesn't have the windows cd, doesn't mean the windows is illegal right?

All computers must come with the original CDs for the OS and the programs installed on them. When you donate a PC you must also give the CDs.
In your case, I think the best option is to buy an OEM copy of Windows.

Check Newegg, as prices in my country are slightly different. I think Win2k costs over 150 bucks.

You might be able to get an OEM at a computer show for less than $140 (got mine for $129). Think about it. It's not so much to pay in order to allow you to reinstall whenever you need/want, to allow you to install updates, to allow you to use the recovery options on the CD, and on and on. It's good security for your system.

windows xp is only $90 from www.newegg.com . might be able to save some money by trying that instead of win2k.

is this also not acceptable? |

One thing with the OEM version... You are your own support not MS.
Another thing, putting one copy on more than one PC is illegal and is not to be disscussed here at the Mech. |

If you were given the licenses with the computers - or at least one of them, you would be legal sharing an original CD between the 2. More and more OEM's are hotloading Windows these days and either providing only a restore CD or nothing at all - except for a license.
XP Pro licenses can be downgraded - it's legal to install Win2K Pro on a computer with a XP Pro license. |

I believe that the only way this would be Ok is if you legally owned two licenses and for some reason you couldn’t locate one of the licensed Cd’s when you needed to install extra components. |

Sounds to me like you need to contact the vender of your computers, if bought from a store to get the cd/license for software they installed. But if all your computers have being bought at garage sales then you are simply out of luck, you bought the hardware, not the software (unless they gave you the original CDs/licenses.

You have to have a license for the operating system and/or have a license for every bit of software that you run on that computer.
It is not a Windows sticker that needs to go on a machine. For microsoft products, it could be the certificate of authenticity that comes when you buy the software, but usually if you have the ORIGINAL installation media (CD, floppies, disk .. whatever) that is a license enough. Its pretty simple, and there is no need to go about this so much and hopefully not have someone suggesting something illegal. No s/w mfger cares whether you have one computer or eight computers - unless you paid for the software to run on more than one computer, the software is licensed to be legally run on one machine, no ifs ands or buts. They dont care whether the person who sold it to you didnt give you an operating system, they dont care whether you lost the installation CD. That is the legal situation, and that is all that will be touched on this board. Quote:

Guys, something just popped in my head while I was registering mw Windows2000....you think Microsoft would give me the cds since I bought 2 comps with legal win2k but received no cd?
I'm also thinking of calling this place,"Akita Copy Products Inc.",when I bought the computers...there is a spec sheet attached and it says "Akita ...." on top... |

I don't have an easy answer for you. Basically, you should have received CDs, license, and manuals with your computer. The license, or Certificate of Authencity, can be a sticker on the case (with OEM products), or a piece of paper (with retail products).
The original puchaser received these materials, and Microsoft's license (as well as most other s/w companies) require that these materials accompany the hardware or be totally uninstalled. You can find more information about your Windows 2000 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/default.asp Without the CDs, license, and manuals, you are illegal. What you should do to become legal is:

Contact the person you puchased the computer(s) from to receive your CD and licenses,
Contact Akita Copy Products Inc to see if you can buy your CDs and license,
Contact Microsoft and explain your situation, and ?possibly? get free/low cost CDs and license.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
