Norton Ghost Q's
I was wondering if some one would help me out ? I just formatted my PC, it is completley new. Nothing on it except for the OS ( XP Pro ).
1- Now i want to know if Norton Ghost will make a complete copy ( disk image ) of my HardDrive. If it does, then instead of formatting it i can just load the disk image ? 2- I have a 40 Gb HardDisk, with nothing on it but mp3's, pictures and programs ( nothing is installed on this HD, I use it as place to store stuff ) Can i make a copy of this HD ? So if it were damaged i could have it ? I mean, u know if i had a picture for example that was of value to me. I would put the picture on a floppy disk or burn it to a CD-R so i have a copy. Is this how Norton Ghost works ? 3- Now that i have formatted my Computer i will begin installing all my programs on it like before. After i am done installing all the software. Can i make a diskimage of my hard disk. My friend wants his pc to be exactly like mine. Would this work ? I mean make a image of my HD and then install Norton Ghost on his pc and then copy my Image to his PC ? Thanks in advance,

1 - yes
2 - yes, norton ghost will create an exact image of the drive 3 - yes, but you will probably need to use the ENUM trick. Last edited by Streams; 10-05-2002 at 04:04 AM. |

The ENUM trick is only for Win9x/ME, XP enumerates hardware differently. Ghosting XP for multiple machines only works if you have a corporate license (the activation issue) and also I think you need to use sysprep to clear the SID's.

Hi CorruptedSanitY,
Check out this link: Radified Guide to Norton Ghost What version of Ghost do you have? Ghost 2002 works with WinXP. But it only saves to FAT32 partitions, not NTFS (it can make an image of a NTFS partition though). Ghost has a limit of 2GB file size for saved images, but it will split an image over several files if necessary. Changes in the next version of Ghost: PC World: Ghost 2003 Cricket

HERE is an excellent tutorial on Norton Ghost.
In addition to backing up your *.gho image file on a cdr-rw, if you create a partition for your ghost images, this will also provide additional backup protection. cheers, ~pawprint~ |

I gave up on Norton Ghost 2002 and went with drive image 2002. It is far superior and you do not have to use switches if you have ntfs.

Hi brentconn,
Strange how different things work on different systems. I tried Drive Image 2002 but it flat would not work on my system and took it back. Their tech support, I have to admit, bent over backward to make it right but couldn't. Ghost works fine on my system. TwoRails |
