ntfs.sys

Hey gang!

Working on a pc at the mo which when after a fdisking and formatting, when I boot up from XP cd it doesn't even get to "F8 to agree" it stops with the message:

ntfs.sys is corrupted

Installation cannot continue

Any ideas, I presume its hardware related?

Cheers.

It sounds as though you may be trying to install XP on a non NTFS partition or on one that is corrupt.

When you boot up from the CD you can configure your hard drive from there. Reformat the partition using the file system you want to use. You don't need to use FDISK with XP.

I would try and use a win98 startup disk and delete the partion from there .. then restart and boot to the xp cd and see if that works and then you can reformat and install xp!

did you use win98 to formatt the drive?

if so you have to use the xp cd to formatt to ntfs

I'd go to www.bootdisk.com and download a bootdisk. Boot to the floppy, delete all partitions, reboot. Fdisk, create partitions, reboot. Then try a format c: /u then go try to boot to the CD

Does the error happen when the setup is copying the setup files to the HDD? It may be that the cdrom needs to cleaned or that the cdrom is failing to read the files off of the cd or even a bad cd.

Well gang, I came into work this morning fresh minded with thought that it was hardware relatedand did 2 things:

1.I cleared the CMOS-> No effect

2. Changed the RAM. RESULT!

So I'm sorted but not really in the know about why and how?
The only background I got to this story was "A friend put in the windows XP cd". "Some friend" I always say when I hear the "My friend ..." story.I know bad RAM can do a whole lot of strange things!

Thanks for the input!
