Hard disk access during dvd playing
Hi
I have a dvd player on a pc that operated very nicely until recently, now it is slow and I have noticed that the hard drive is continously accessed during dvd playind, I suspect that is part of the problem slowing it down, would anyone have a suggestion? Thanks Philgoelandbavard@aol.com |

Can you tell us a little bit more about your setup? (OS, hardware, etc.)
Have you tried running "msconfig"? If you go to "Start," then "Run," then type in "msconfig" and hit "OK" this will bring up a box. The last tab shows you what is loaded when you start up windows. A lot of that stuff you don't need and it can slow your system down. Uncheck as many of the boxes as you can. (If you don't know what it is, leave it alone until you can determine whether or not it's needed. It may be one of those programs which is continuously accessing your hard drive. The indexing feature of MS Office is notorious for causing what you are describing. I can't remember off the top of my head how to shut it off though...someone? |

Hi goelandbavard,
You could also try Disk Cleanup and Defrag the Hard Drive. Clear out your Temporarary Internet Files folder. How much free space do you have left on your Hard Drive? |

Hi goelandbavard,
You might also want to consider upping your RAM to 512MB or more. WinXP loves RAM and will use all you can give it. It'll help reduce the amount of swap file usage your system does. Defrag your hard drive regularly. Cricket

I suggest you hit ctrl, alt, delet at the same time of course, and find out what applications are running in the background. Start closing apps until you find out which one is hogging the cpu and disk. If it was working before then you do not need more ram or any other hardware. DEFRAG every week!!!!

Thanks for all your suggestions, The hard drive is 98% free so I don't think that is where the problem is, I'll run a defrag just to see what happens, and certainly check what application is running and "hogging" the system.
Thanks again for your suggestions |

Also a good idea to delete the contents of your prefetch directory; C:\windows\prefetch or winnt .. you dont need todo it regularly, but once in a while makes a difference in performance.
