Systems is dangerously low on resources

Just had a customer (PIII 128MB Dell) report this error message when trying to load Word with no other applications loaded. Very suspicious.

Hav been on to M$oft KB and found this:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q300059

anyone any ideas on this tool or what I should be looking for?

It can happen if the machine has been on for a long period of time and not rebooted. If it happens frequently.... take a look at how many items are in startup and eliminate all of those that aren't needed. Finally, do a virus scan and a spyware scan.

Do a Find > Files for Normal.dot.
Then Rename or delete it when found.

If this file gets corrupted, it will cause Resource issues with Word. When Word is started the file will be recreated.
You may/will lose some of the personalized defaults for Word.

When you say "no other applications loaded", does that include everything in the taskbar by the clock? I'll bet there's at least 6 icons there. Shut them all off via msconfig. Real Player/Jukebox and most anti-virus progs have their own settings to NOT start when windows starts.

That's a good point about the icons in Startup. One thing though, if the Anti Virus does not start when Windows starts, does that not mean that it is not auto protecting & thus checking incoming e-mails for viruses?

Yes...if the AV isn't starting up with Windows, it's not protecting your computer at all.

Your clien could also try the Gateway Resource Assistant.

While he/she has a Dell, it will still work.

It can be found at http://support.gateway.com/support/d...rce+Assistant+

Here's a quote from Gateway about it.

Quote:
The Gateway Resource Assistant is a hardware diagnostic and information tool which offers suggestions to reduce the number of lockups and errors and to improve the performance of the computer.

The utility takes a snapshot of the amount of resources that the computer has available at each startup. If a significant change in the amount of free resources is detected, the Gateway Resource Assistant will provide a helpful information screen.

Supports: Windows Me, Windows 98SE, Windows 98, Windows 95

Note: Installation Instructions

Click on link above and choose "Save this program to disk". Note where you save the file, grainstall.exe. After the download is complete, find the file and double-click to automatically unzip and install the files. After installing the utility you will see a dialog box stating that the utility was successfully installed.

This utility runs automatically every time the computer starts, takes its snapshot and then exits. It does not stay running in the background and will not affect system performance. You can view the information screen at any time by following these steps: Click Start, Programs, Gateway Utilities, then Gateway Resource Assistant.

Note: You must wait 10-12 seconds before accessing the utility for the first time.

Note: This utility is not compatible with Windows NT or XP

Roy, I've downloaded this utility. In your opinion is it of any real value?

Richard,
I used it on my Win98 machine before I upgraded to XP. It helped me find out why my computer would lock up. Usually it happened when I had many browser windows open.

BTW I also added more RAM when I upgraded ... 512MB is great!

Hope this answers your question.
