Lost drive E and ctrl-alt-del

Hi guys, I have a win 98 machine that was working just fine until I burned a CD today. Then it froze so I rebooted and only have drive E (cdrw) in safe mode. And when I'm in regular windows I have C/D but no E and hitting ctrl-alt-del does nothing anymore no box pops up at all.I uninstalled /reinstalled the cdr software.Tried using the hardware detection,no viruses it is kept up in maintenance. It's just weird any ideas would be appreciated
Don

Update I just disconnected the cdrw drive until I figure this out,but I still receive no response after hitting the ctrl-alt-del keys.

Have you tried "scanreg/restore" to see if it would take it back to normal?

I'm thinking corrupt files, thats why I asked about the scanreg/restore. Have you tried "System File Checker" to see if everything checks out.

Hi Don

How far back did that Registry restore let you go? It might not have been far enough to be before the trouble started. You might try RegClean or RegMaid (can be downloaded from the Microsoft download site). I suppose you could try extracting Taskmon.exe from your Win98SE disk and putting it in your C:\Windows folder, in case the current model is missing or corrupt.

And just for the heck of it, try removing your keyboard in Safe Mode and letting Windows re-detect it (you can also try a different keyboard, just to cover that angle) . . . is it a fancy multimedia/internet keyboard or a wireless? - they have those cranky drivers that they need: if you've got one of those, you might uninstall/reinstall them.

Hi Gary thanks for your fast reply.
My reg back ups all failed, I found out today that my wife went to windows update & installed the lastest patch/update thats when all this happened ARUGHHH !!
I tried regclean no luck
I removed the keyboard no luck
tried another keyboard no luck
However ctrl alt del works in DOS but not in windows or safe mode.
I really don't like being without that function it's driving me crazy (er)
BTW it's a Logitech New Touch keyboard
I also tried reinstalling windows over itself with no luck.
And extracted Taskmon no luck
Any more ideas ??
Thanks !
Don

See if you can tell what update it was, & I'll see if I can find out anything about it. . .

Tell you what (if you feel lucky) - you know the saying "hair of the dog that bit you" - if you download/install IE6 or IE6's Service Pack 1, that has TaskScheduler (and possibly a version of Taskmon too) as part of the download. . . if you have broadband, it's a quick try (otherwise it's a painfully slow wait)
