Sound stopped working for NO reason...

If I go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Sounds and Multimedia and click on the "Show volume control on the taskbar", I get an error message saying:

Quote:
Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the volume control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
***!!??

And when you go to add it, did it fix it?

Have you tried removing the soundcard from the device manager and rebooting?

No new hardware, Yes scanned for viruses.

It turns out that it's a hardware problem. Either my speakers or my card.

Case closed, thanks guys.

I had that happen, and I just went to another working computer and went into the C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder and found the files called sndrec32 and sndvol32. I copied them onto a floppy, and then put them in the exact same location on my computer and it started working again. How they disappeared in the first place was a mystery to me.

Sorry, I'm used to video game boards, where even posts on the second page most likely were posted within 5 minutes of each other.
