looking for info...

Hello,

I'm having trouble with a system spuratically freezing up on me. It's not a specific program that is freezing and it's not at certain times. I've tried two different systems in the same spot in the office and teh second one seems to be worse than the first. I don't believe it's a hardware problem and can think of anything creating some interferance that is near the system.

Now what I'm looking for is something to help me do some trouble shooting on systems running win98 plus ans SE or if any one has some suggestions feel free to post.

I've also tried updating the MS critical updates and still no success.

I know this is very brief but I don't have a lot of info as to why it is freezing.

So you moved a perfectly good working pc to the same desk and THEN it started freezing up?

If so, might try getting the electricity from down the hall with a long cord. A bad ballast in a fluorescent fixture could also be a possibility.

Hi G-Surfer

I have to go with EzyStvy, as it sure does sound like a "source" problem; meaning an outlet problem. If you have building maintenance, have them check it out. It could be wired wrong, or a dozen other things, some of which could be very unsafe...

The plug is properly grounded, right?

As far as I can tell everything is grounded correctly. I installed a UPS which has an indicator light on it to tell you if the wall socket isn't wired correctly. I've never seen the indicator light come on to show any problems.
I think I'm going to try and put the computer in another spot for a bit and see if the problem still occurs.
One other thing, do you think a faulty network cable could cause a system to freeze up like this? Or possibly win98 plus has some issues with sharing printers on the network? I want to update this system to win98SE but the disks I has at the moment can only be used for systems without an operating system. :P Do you know if there is any way to use those cd's to upgrade without reformatting?

In my experience a faulty network cable, crossover or otherwise has ever caused a machine to freeze up. As long as you're sure it's not hardware. sounds like a fan or hard drive. Printer sharing has never caused similar issues either. I never had problems with win95 or 98.
If you have a ups then that should cover all spike and power fluctuation issues. Think about anything in the proximity, un shielded speakers?
You may be able to do a conditional format of the pc then install win98se fresh but still keeping the data you have on the disk. One of the other more knowledgeable guys on the forum may know more about that.
