ME Protection Error

With Windows 95 it was possible to sort out a protection error I remember by changing a line in some file

What should I look for when trying to troubleshoot a Windows ME protection error? I have to sort one out soon and would like to know where to start...

Or would it be easier to tell them there's nothing that can be done and wipe it clean, start again? (They don't have anything too important on there I don't think)

Thanks,

Hi fatboyjim,

is there anything else with the error?? I have to admit, I find the protection error very difficult to track, and usually wind up doing the old -hit-n-miss thing.

My recent protection error problem on my own box fought me for a month, as it was erratic and would only occur ocasionally on a cold boot. Windows tech sites indicated it's a memory problem, but DocMemory found nothing, besides it would work fine after if finally booted.

On my box, the problem turned out to be a USB driver problem!!! I updated from USB 2.0 to something like 2.0.2.1 and have not had the problem since.

HTH

I don't think there's anything else with it

I'm going to look at it tonight though. If it's just as they say "Windows Protection Error, Restart" then I think it's going to be bye-bye windows and go for a reinstall

It's only a family with a couple of kid's games on their computer

I don't think a reinstall would cause too many problems. Only thing is it's a Compaq Bell or something (Just hope they have the repair disc thing)

Cheers,

Jim
