I use Win98se and I used to know where to save different pictures in C:\Windows so that when I want to change wallpaper I don't lose the old one. In other words, it stays in the Display>Wallpaper scroll menu.
Hope that made sense. Carl |

Hi Kubie,
That should be you C:\Windows directory. Note that you can have the picture anywhere your want on your system, just use the "Browse" button to find it. HTH TwoRails |

Hi TwoRails,
I just don't remember the C:\Windows file it goes into. Its either themes or something like that. All I know is is that when its in the proper file, any wallpaper will be in the scroll menu in display and you can pick and choose just like MS wallpaper. Looks like I'll have to "Browse" for it. Thanks for the help. Carl |

Just C:\Windows -- no sub-directory. Themes (unless you mean Themes) normally go into: C:\Program Files\Plus!\Themes When you do a "Browes" for the first time, the default directory should be shown. It's always been c:\windows in every 98 box I've built. That's also were I put the pictures I don't want to have to search / browse for. ![]() TwoRails |

aym_7,
I don't remember the WEB part. I'll try it and see if it works. TwoRails, I think I made a folder once for just wallpaper, maybe I'll do that again. Carl |

It's been a while since I have used 98, but I thought they went into the C:\Windows\System folder.

Hi lil jimmie,
That could sure be. I tried the C:\Windows and when I try to use a wallpaper, it says I need to have Active Desktop Enabled. Active desktop I don't want. Carl |

I wonder if I'm thinking the right thing here... I'm thinking: Right click on the Desktop, then Click Properties, and the Background tab sheet is showing. Here you pick the picture from the list, or Click Browse. Is this what you want to do?? TwoRails |

Not speaking for Kubie here, but I assumed he was wanting to skip the browse option and have the wallpaper show up in the selection of wallpaper that is show by default with the wallpaper choices.

Hi Fellas,
I've tried all suggestions and I can't get them to work for me. There is one thing I'll throw out for discussion. Do the backgrounds that I want in the scroll list need to be .bmp? The ones I'm trying to add to the list are .jpg. The Win98 backgrounds are spread out through the C:\Windows folder and they are all .bmp The C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper folder has two wallpapers. They are the ones that say "Active Desktop" and the dark blue one that has Windows98 in the upper right hand corner. I'm going to select some backgrounds from my list, change them to the .bmp format, put them in the Windows folder and see if thats the trick. Sure appreciate all the help here. The 'Mech is great. SUCCESS!!!
If you have a picture you want to have as your background, save it with a .bmp extension. Copy and paste to the C:\Windows folder. Go to Display and click Browse. When you find and open the background you want, it also puts it in the scroll list and it stays there even after you change backgrounds. I change backgrounds every once in a while and my favorites are right there in display. Maybe this will help someone sometime. Carl |

Hi Kubie,
Your last post is ringing some proverbial bells. If I remember correctly, without the active desktop, you are limited in what will display as Wallpaper. I know that BMP is OK, but I thought it covered others, like jpeg, as well..... maybe not. With the active desktop on, you can do more things, like make a web page you wallpaper. I think this is where the ...\web\wallpaper directory comes in. I've just used BMPs and jpegs, and never tried an HTML wallpaper. Also, with the active desktop, it can still run, and have the "look-n-feel" of Win 95 / 98, but you do have more choices. We're getting closer, I hope ![]() TwoRails edit: PS: dang, I have to learn to type faster !!! Kubie, you got another post in after I started typing this post!! |

Hey Kubie!
If you want a real easy wallpaper manager to use for an OS as far back as Win95, you might check out Taffeta. I used to use another one but they quit being a freebie and started charging for their product so I had to look for another. I didn't know anything about it at first but I really like it now. It stays in the system tray so changing your wallpaper is just a click away. You just make your own folder to save the pics in. It accepts alot of different formats, including .bmp and .jpg. If you want to check it out, they moved their site apparently to http://www.sevana.com/taffeta/ I downloaded my version from Cnet, but I can't seem to find it there or on ZdNet anymore. hth.
