What is gdi.exe?

Hey guys,

I wouldn't mind but this is OUR pc in our workshop running win98se.
Any application we try to open comes up with the old:

" caused an invalid page fault in gdi.exe"

I replaced gdi.exe with a gdi.exe form another pc running win98se but still no joy.

Whats the story?

Virus?
i heard bad RAM can cause it?
And what the hell does gdi.exe do anyway cuz I can't find a description online anywhere!?

Cheers!

Hello,
does the error say "Explorer caused an invalid page fault in gdi.exe"? If so, look here. I believe gdi.exe is Windows Graphics Device Interface. There are numerous articles in the MSKB, you could try searching it, or just type the error message into Google and do a search.

Hi MrBigglesworth,

GDI.exe is the part of Windows that helps to display the graphics on the screen.

I would try updating your video drivers first, and if that doesn't help, try reinstalling Windows over the top of itself.

That should clear up the error without you having to tear your hair out.

According to MS, SFC can have a problem replacing gdi.exe.

It appears to copy the wrong version of gdi.exe

Hi all -

Either the win98 re-install or the SFC run will do the trick with a Windows 98 2nd Edition machine. (the bug that mike b. remembers was fixed in the 2nd Edition version of sfc.exe = it was a directory type problem, when the program grabbed the 'mini' version of gdi [used only for setup] instead of the 'full' version)

Now I'm going to be like the motherboards on Hal's Tips & Tricks thread and "post no more" (I'm tired & have to sleep now) Good night!

Thanks Gary - I missed the footnote at the bottom of the page.

Nuke:

System File Checker

System Information>Tools

It checks and can replace corrupted and changed system files.

It's good for extracting copies of "specific" files from the CABs - but the full file checking and verification can be a real pain unless you have used it all the time and know which file versions you want to remain and which you want to replace.

Therefore, I never use it for that.

OK. Thanks.

Guess I won't be using it either.

Is this a feature for W98SE only? I have W98FE.

As far as I know, it was present from Win98 onwards.
