Hello all,
I'm having a problem with switching IRQ's. I have tried to switch them but everytime I reboot nothing works forcing me to go back in safe mode and resetting them. I tried switching my cards around with no luck(. Currently my video and Lan card are on IRQ11 and sound on 3.What I need to do is get the lan and video to seperat IRQ"s I have win98se with a Nvida geforce3Ti200, Creativelabs Audigy and a Soho 10/100. Any help with info or a link on "how to do " would really be appreciated. Thank You in advance. |

Hi KTA,
What motherboard do you have? Most newer motherboards allow you to assign IRQ's to the first 4 PCI slots. While you're in the BIOS, you might want to see if PNP OS is set to NO and that ACPI is disabled. Cricket

Is the Video and LAN card causing a problem sharing on IRQ11?
If not, you might be as well leaving them. However, if they are or you just want to experiement, follow Cricket's advice, and if you're not using your Serial (COMM) Ports, disable them in the BIOS. That will free up two IRQs and usually results in a redistribution of some devices on some IRQs. If possible, don't put a PCI card in the slot next to the AGP slot as both share resources. If your mobo BIOS supports it, assign the PCI slot with the LAN card to IRQ 10 and slot with your Audigy to IRQ 5. I'm afraid getting things to share "nicely" varies with mobos and OS and is very much a case of trial and error. HTH |

Cricket and Mike,
Thank's so much for addressing my problem. I wasn't aware to check the bios or should say never thought to check them first. This actually is the first time I've had to re-assign my IRQ's. I must confess that besides being a computer tinkerer I am a EverQuest semi-junkie). EQ just went through some updating getting ready for a new add-on package and now really demand the systems to allocate the irq's solefully for the video, sound and land.Window's was happy running the two, video and lan on 11 together and I wish Mike, EQ liked it also)Hehe. I currently have a mobo and processor with a bit of time, Biostar M7MKE slotA ( lol ) w/a 750 Thunderbird for the math crunching. Chipset is the Via KX133. Guy's, when I go back and try re-assinging irq's should I do it for all three then or directing just one will do? Will win98 allow me to do it? Well, I'll go give it a shot and will let ya's know how I made out. By the way, I also switched around my cards leaving the first pci open to see if win would change the irq's and had no luck. Thank's once more. I would like for you guys to know that I really appreciate your time and help. KTA |

Hi KTA,
I would just try to get the NIC on it's own IRQ for now. Like mike breck mentioned, if you aren't using the serial ports, disable COM1 and COM2 in BIOS. Likewise with parallel port (if you're using a USB printer). After you're done reassigning the PCI slot the NIC is in, boot into Safe Mode and check Device Manager for any duplicate or multiple entry for your devices. Remove any extra entries and reboot to normal Windows. You may want to think about upgrading to WinXP, it handles IRQ's much better than Win98 (it actually handles resource sharing really well)...plus it's a much more stable operating system. Cricket

KTA
The easiest way is to assign an IRQ to a given PCI slot. Check your BIOS and mobo manual to see if it allows you to do that. If it doesn't, then take out the LAN card, disable the SERIAL PORTS and see how the IRQS sort themselves out in Device Manager. Remember to set PNP OS to NO and disable ACPI (if the option exists). This will allow the BIOS to allocate the IRQs instead of Windows and allow you to change them around. A feature that many Windows XP users regret losing - especially when they end up with IRQ problems. The only way to do this in XP is to disable ACPI and reinstall XP as a Standard HAL. But that defeats one of the very reasons for moving to XP in the first place. You could then try putting the LAN back in different slots to see if it will attach itself to another IRQ apart from 11. How many other PCI cards do you have? |
