Sumone gave me two old 486-66 boxes...am planning to try win 3.1 on one of them--will it be possible to "run" a 56K modem?..i doubt it since no 56k modem (to my knowkledge) has win 3.1 drivers??
thanx... If I cant run a 56k modem with 3.1, ill install win95 frm floppies! slow days are here again

If you have Win95, I'd just load that up. I've worked on an old 486 recently with Windows95 and the 56K modem worked fine.

It won't run a "Winmodem", but will run any good 56k hard modem. Standard "Hayes Compatible" drivers are built in to Win3.1

Right, Winmodems need at least a P166 MMX in order to run.
You can buy an external serial modem. I used once a USR Sportster on a non-MMX Pentium 166 machine and it ran flawlessly. You can always use the modem in another machine when that old 486 gives up the ghost, so I think it's a smart investment.
