I am trying to reinstall Windows XP Home in my system due to some problems I am having with my CD-RW drive. It appears that uninstalling Easy CD Creator 5 (which did not support my drive) removed something from the system and now I cannot open (unfinished) CD-R or CD-RW disks from Explorer as I used to do before.
Someone suggested reinstalling Windows in order to restore whatever is missing. But I have tried a couple of times and the setup always hangs after the first reboot at the “Starting Windows Setup” screen. The bar at the bottom of the screen never gets solid. This happens either by booting from the Windows XP original CD or by selecting “Windows Setup” from the bootup menu. How can I get past this point? What causes it? And by the way, any other suggestion about my original problem with the CD-RW drive?

As for the first problem, I am unsure. But, in the case of the CD-RW, have you updated you EZ CD creator to the latest release? The updates contain support for many new CD RW drives.

The dreaded Roxio hex! I have yet to hear anything good about it.
Is re-formatting out of the question? You could also remove some non-essential hardware prior to reinstall? why it's happeneing, who knows, we don't know exactly where it's hanging and on what. |

Yes, reformatting is totally out of the question.
I had the latest EZ CD update but my drive was still unsupported according to the support forum in the vendor's web site. |

Instead of reinstalling try the repair option, when you click on install,an option should ask if you wish to install or repair an existing OS,choose repair, see if that does anything.

The reinstallation problem was caused by a IDE card I have here for a fifth IDE device I have here. Removed the card for the installation and everything worked fine.
However, the CD problem was not fixed by the reinstallation. It appears that DirectCD as it comes built into XP was damaged when Easy CD Creator was uninstalled. How do I fix that? |
