win rar (any other archive) help!

ok, heres my problem... on win 2k and xp.
when i download something that is split up like r01, r02, r03...etc...
or 001,002,003, etc...
when i extract i get an error that says "file is corrupt" but its not an archive file, its a file thats compressed, and i have to extract the archives like 7 or 8 times b4 they extract, i know the files arent damaged, cuz they extract on win 98, i've used winrar i get that error
i used winace i get that error, i dont know what to do, can someone plz help me??!

Are you sure that they are created by the same major version of Winrar? Why dont you just extract the archives (as you say they do extract after 7 or 8 tries) and then rearchive it back again yourself with your version of Winace or Winrar?

i get errors when i archive anything, like i did say, they extract like 7 or 8 times, but come on, its ANNOYING!

Have you tried reinstalling? What version of WinRAR do you have? I have version 3.00 running just fine on Win2K

I thought it was just an extraction error, not also when you archive files. doctorgonzo is right, it might be solved by reinstalling the software itself. or try running a disk check or some utility like that .. it might be symptomatic of a bad drive. By the way, is it the same error when u archive files using Winace as ace? Winrar as rar? Winzip as zip? files? or does it occur when you use winace to create rar files? Does it happen only on digests (or spanned files?) Do you get the same error when u create one large archive? Its a baffling.

only spanned files...
and whenever i try archiving files and spanning them, i get the error.
reinstalling wont help, i've reinstalled, reformatted, reinstalled, installed an older version, i'm running 3.0 right now, i'm goin insane!!!!!
