Hi, I am looking for referrals for the best Multi O/S software. I would like to eventually have Win98, Win2000, and XP or Linus running on the same box and with all peripherals supported.
I found the following article recomment Hyperos to be interesting... http://www.multiboot.net/. I have also had VMWare recommended. What's the concensus out there? |

Huh? Win2k, XP, and Linux all come with a boot loader, so no 3rd party software is needed.
Partition your drive(s), one for each OS, and start with the oldest/dumbest (win9x), then Win2k, then XP, the Linux last. If you really must have a 3rd party boot loader, look at www.xosl.org for a really easy to use free one. |

Wow Thanks
How do you get around the two o/s limitations if you use one of the 'in box' options?
I will check out the link you sent also. Thanks again.... |

Can't tell you about LILO for sure but Win2K and WinXP bootmanager can boot more than two OS'es..

I'm currently running 4 OS's...what "2 OS limit" are you talking about?
You can run as many OS's as you like, although some of them MUST have their own partition, and at least ONE of them must be on a primary active partition. Somewhere, there's an article about a kid who had like 80 OS's on one computer... LILO (or GRUB) will also load as many OS's as you like, althought the way I have it set up, is LILO loads either Linux or Windows, which then takes me to the Windows loader to choose which Windows OS to load...kinda redundant, but it works on this system, because of the multiple users who each have their own OS preference. |

My bad - reboot
My Network Op guy at work had referred to the two O/S limitation when loaded Win 2k. I took his word for it....
I will give it a shot as soon as I determine if my BIOS has ACPI. thanks |

What does ACPI have to do with multi-booting?
What does Win2k have to do with a mythical two OS limit? Sorry, I'm in the dark here... It's far simpler than most people think, just partition your drive(s), and start loading the dumbest OS first (Win9x). Linux (or BeOS (any non-MS OS)) can be loaded anywhere in the sequence, first, last, or inbetween. |

Thanks, During win2k setup it alows you to go to the windows website and check for compatibility issues. There it indicates your bios needs to be ACPI?
not true?? |

Ok I have never seen an option to check for compatibility issues with Win 2000 and I have performed hundreds of installs of 2000. So excuse me for asking, but at what point in the setup is this option at?

ACPI bios is not required for Win2K but it makes things (specifically IRQ sharing) easier. If your motherboard is newer than about 4 years old it should have no problems. I've installed 2K on some old boards without ACPI and as long as you don't have a box full of cards you won't have any issues.

Nowhere that I know of is ACPI required...recommended in a few cases, but not required.
Skip the online check (during the XP install) and install it, then go get any pertinent updates. |
