deleting index.dat
How exactly can you delete index.dat in the history and cookies folder. I remember in W98 you can boot into DOS and do something like: DELTREE C:\WINDOWS\cookies\index.dat But, for some reason I haven't been able to get it just right. What am I missing. Wanna do this to a ME system. Appreciate any help!

In Win98, I simply open with notepad and delete the contents, then save. I think the OS puts the file back after you re-start.

I tried that, but, I get a message that says that file is in use by another application and cannot be accessed. Good suggestion, perhaps it just won't work with ME.

In DOS the command is" Deltree/y tempor~1" for the temporary files and "Deltree/y history" for the history files. Without the quotation marks of course. Also, notice the space between the Y and the file name.

deltree is to delete directories anyway. del C:\WINDOWS\cookies\index.dat might work. try starting in safe mode to delete it.

Yea, but when you exit and restart Windows will make new directories, but the directories will now be clean and empty.

If booting to safe mode doesn't help, boot using a bootable floppy, and then execute the command homer15 posted.
Why do you want to delete it any way? It's possible to clear everything (history, Internet cache...) from within Windows. |

Nah, safe mode doesn't work. I've been trying to use a Win98 boot disc to get under the OS just like aym_7 suggested. I was able to delete it via del C:\WINDOWS\cookies\index.dat , like homer 15 suggested. Deleting history, internet cache etc. does not delete the hidden threads. That only gets rid of what you can see. I think this web site can answer most of your questions.
http://www.fsm.nl/ward/spiderus.html I've often wondered why certain sites still remain in the drop down URL box of ie, even after all cookies, history and temp. internet cashe has been deleted. This info, in my opinion, needs to get out. |

To clear this drop down box, right-click the taskbar, select properties, and look for something like "Clear recently used documents list" or something similar, I can't remember exactly.
