Keyboard and Mouse stop responding

A strange problem but somtimes the mouse and keyboard of my new computer stop responding. It's not like a set time it happens, sometimes it doesn't happen at all. It's happened twice today but i can't pinpoint the problem... Also, i've noticed once or twoce the mouse moving a little bit on it's own

I read on the net somewhere it can becaused by the an incompatibility between the mouse and the modem/soundcard when the IRQ settings are set the same... Looked up the IRQ setting of my mouse and the soundcard and indeed it was the same. They were both set to 10. Restarted my computer and this time it was set to 12.

But my questions?

Is that really the cause? And if so, how do you change the IRQ number of hardware? Couldn't work out how to do it in XP. It's listed but i can't untick the automatic dection box (it's greyed out) and i've found no other way to do it so far.

Thanks for any advice you can offer.

You do have ACPI enabled on your system dont you? If your using XP you probably do, if you do then your problem is not an IRQ conflict and it is probably something else. Is the keyboard your using wireless? Also is it maybe somekind of special keyboard/mouse and do you maybe have a software CD that came with them? I dont think that you need to install or use the software for them to work (if in fact this is the case) it is usually just for special buttons and such. You could try going into 'msconfig' and unchecking any software that relates to either your keyboard or mouse, as I said they should still work with the exception of special buttons...

I think i do have that enabled but as i've just moved to XP i've got very little knowledge on things at the moment! THe mouse and keyboard are both special function ones (Microsoft Internet Keyboard and IntelliMouse (just a scroll mouse)) but they are not wireless.

If i unplug and plug them in the back in again they'll start responding but that gets irretating. I've just updated the keyboard and mouse drivers from the downloads at the microsoft website so i'll see how that goes first... I may come back to this topic though...

Thanks

If you are using the Keyboard and or mouse in the PS2 ports, DO NOT UNPLUG OR RE-PLUG THEM UNLESS THE COMPUTER IS SHUTDOWN. THIS CAN AND EVENTUALLY WILL DAMAGE THE MAINBOARD.
Now if you are using these as USB devices, try using them on the PS2 ports as they may be interferring with each other.
I really see no use in using the keyboard on USB as I cannot type fast enough to make any difference.

Um, oops! I do remember reading something about that before actually but i had kinda forgot

Using them on PS2 ports because that the end it comes with, and like you said, i didn't see the point in wasting a USB port just for a keyboard or mouse...

Anyway, just using my computer a lot (what a great excuse to use it!) to see if the thing crashes with slightly more up to date drivers... As i said, it's not at regular intervals that it crashes

Yes I would be willing to bet that if the software (not drivers but the software program(s)) loads up when you boot your computer that at some point(s) it conflicts with something, if you were not to attatched to those special buttons and such you could run 'msconfig' and in the startup section disable it so that it doesnt load up when the computer boots, or even uninstall them all together. I dont use the software that came with my scroll mouse and it still works just fine, scroll wheel and all. I also have a software program that came with my keyboard which I keep disabled in msconfig 90% of the time and it still works fine, aside from the volume & multimedia buttons.
