stuck in restarting loop
I installed a new HD and win 2000 P about 2 weeks ago. yesterday it began getting stuck in a restarting loop. It begins loading windows for a while then restarts. Won't ever get past that point. Just an endless cycle. I've heard this problem cited before but never paid attention to the answers. Where do i start???
Thanks, J |

Hi jlowell,
At what point exactly does the system restart? What do you see on screen? Did you install anything new recently? Software? Hardware? Have you tried booting into Safe Mode yet? I think the key is F8...keep hitting it after the first boot screen switches to the next. Cricket

yes I put in the new hard drive and then reloaded all drivers and programs i use. It worked fine for about 2 weeks.
It restarts when it begins loading windows. It will say loading windows on the screen and 3 seconds later restart. |

Hi jlowell,
System didn't restart while you were in Safe Mode? Could be a video driver problem. Go into Safe Mode and remove the display adapter (the video card) and reboot to normal Windows. It'll detect the video card and reinstall the driver. Reboot and see if you can get back into normal Windows without it restarting. If that doesn't help, try the same thing with another device...NIC, soundcard, etc... Cricket

well no luck yet. I removed various drivers and then even pulled the modem, sound card and replaced the video card....still doing the same thing.
maybe I should reinstall windows? |

One other thing you might try while in SafeMode - look in on your System Properties for a setting called "reboot on error" (something like that - I don't have my Win2k machine with me at the moment). . . That will sometimes stop the loop, and also display an error message that will help track down the source of the trouble. (then again...it might be an XP setting I'm thinking of!...I'm a little tired)
I suppose you could try a "repair" install of Win2k, too. That might save some time & be a quick solution. . . . Gary |

have you looked at the bootlog? the last entry may tell you what is causing the restart

I like KHT's idea - in fact, might be worthwhile to look at your Event Logs too(in your Administrator tools) - if you can reach them in Safe Mode. .
