I have 2 comps with win2000 pro and there are currently 4 service packs available from microsoft...Should I download them? What are the benefits of doing so?There are no problems with the computers(knocks on wood)...but just wondering why i should or shouldn't download them.
also do service packs require you to have a win2000 cd?because for those who read my previous thread....you guys know what happened... |

Hi Sam
You must have a garage full of pcs by now. The most recent Service Pack for Win2000 requires that you have a product key for your copy. It checks your hard drive for a valid number (if you're unlucky enough to have picked up one of your second-or-third-hand pcs from someone with a known pirated product key, the Service Pack will disable your pc). If you have licensed Win2k, no problem. I've used all the service packs so far with no problems. . . . Gary [OK, sam - I just looked in on your other thread (I haven't been here on the Win2k forum much lately)... Here's what you need to check: In Windows Explorer, look in at your i386 directory on your hard drive. If it looks like you have a full copy of the cd on there, then you probably have a fully licensed copy of the OS, but no CD. In your Registry, you can search for a value "SourcePath"(if my memory is right) ... if that value is C:\i386, then you probably have a full copy right there on your hard drive, with the product key stored in there somewhere when the pc was first put together for its original owner. As long as you don't transfer the copy of Win2k that is on the machine to another machine, you can update it legally on the Windows Update site. That's a big IF: because you don't know the owner. You might be able to try something like BelArc Advisor; I haven't used that program myself, but it might be able to tell you if you have a legal product key. You have always been honest and straightforward: continue in that direction young man. One OS license per pc. You bought those fair & square: now you have to hope the prior owners were honest & fair] (one more p.s. ...no, Service Packs don't require a CD) Last edited by GaryRouth; 10-19-2002 at 09:30 PM. |

the most recent service pack for win2000 pro is service pack 3.
service packs are all inclusive, meaning that sp3 includes all the fixes from the previous service packs. you only need the latest service pack to get all the fixes. the win2000 sp3 does not check for vaild or invaild registration keys. that was a win xp sp1 feature

by golly, thank you Great One for correcting me - I'd thought that sp3 on Win2k did the same checking as sp1 on XP (too bad when my brain's memory is faulty I can't RMA it & get brand-new replacements!)
Sam -I run the sp3 version on several Win2k machines with no problem. However, there are a few things to consider before downloading: one method is the Express, which checks your system to see what you already have, and only downloads what you need. The other method is the "network" (or all-in-one download: it arrives as one file) - this one is a whopping 125mb download [Even with broadband, you might have to plan the timing of that download]. . . And, as always, some systems may come across problems with the Service Pack. Here's a link to an Eweek article that mentions a few things to watch out for (but most likely you'll do fine): http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,3959,477292,00.asp . . . Gary |

Sam - your last post came as I was typing... And I thought I was such a fast typist.
That's a Good Thing that you don't notice any difference - most of the best updates were security fixes. You might want to disable the automatic update installer, though, as it's default is to reboot after the download/install is complete, which would cause you to lose any changes to unsaved documents that are open at the time. . . (it's covered in the Eweek article) . . . Gary (I disable all automatic activity as a routine rule - since I prefer the check the updates out first) |
