formating ntfs

I need to know if you can format an ntfs partition from a boot disk?
Problem is this, I wan't to format the first partition of my drive (c
but it is an NTFS partition and dos or 98 boot disks don't reckognize it.
Can't boot fromt the CD cause the mobo does not support it.
I need to keep the stuff on the second partition (also ntfs) and simply format and re-install.
How can I do this?

You could boot the computer with a Win98 bootdisk and use cd support and then use the OS's cd to format the partition and reinstall the OS.

Are you sure the motherboard doesn't support booting from the CD? Post the make/model & I'll check if you'd like. Perhaps a bios update might enable that feature. You'd have to have a pretty old motherboard to not have the Cd drive as a boot option. Most boards after 1995 have this feature.

And . . . do you have Partition Magic?

[. . . just saw Alfie's reply: that looks good, too.]

Alfie,

When I tried that, the ram drive that the win98 boot disk creates is on the c drive, I receive ''format not supported on this drive'', drive D is my cd-rom. 4 partitions all NTFS

Since I only want to get rid of the OS partition, would you know if I could use some kind of disk editor that works with NTFS just to overwrite the drive?

Cliff - still curious about the motherboard.

And - why do you want to reformat/reinstall? If you are going to reformat with ntfs and reinstall the same OS, you have the option instead of just doing a "repair" installation.

At any rate, here's an article on how to make a floppy bootdisk from XP (post again if it's Win2k you need)

Best of luck

One other question - if your motherboard is old enough not to be bootable to the cd drive, are you running a drive overlay program to allow full access to a large hard drive (EZ-BIOS or Disk Manager?) . . .

Forgot about that,sorry.
Can you still access the drive?
If you can still boot in to it and your cdrom works in the OS,you can copy the setup files to the 2nd partition and run set up from a command prompt.
It would be most helpful if you let us know which OS and why you wish to format the drive.
Also if you can get it up and running as is.
Microsoft has set up files you can download ,you'll need 6 floppies to put them on,but without knowing which OS, can't guide you to them.

The tip about using Partition Magic worked great !
I found an old version of it that allowed me to format the drive to an fat32, I re- installed and all works great.

Thanks a lot, great advice !

Sorry GarryRouth I wrote Alfies name instead of yours, but thanks still go out to all of you for your help!!!

Alfie,
The mobo is an old asus dual (pentium 1) that I still have kicking around, I use it for storage. I checked the Asus site and there is no bios upgrade for it. Its an old socket 7, P/I-P55TP4N if I remember correctly
