Please Help!!!
I just used one of those disc cleaner applications to see what files on my hard drive it considered unnecessary. It showed that I had over 3000 files that this application considered safe to delete. Here I error on the cautious side. Too many files to delete but......there was a listing for c:\windows\temporary internet files\content IE5\Y8QL....quite a load of files with this heading. I usually make it a point to empty out my temp internet files every day. Right now I checked the 8 folders under temp internet and all are empty...these folders are labeled Y8Ql, GDIB, LQBC, etc. Can it be that all the temporary internet files that this application found were put somewhere in the system before I started to regularly delete them after my internet session? I unchecked the hidden files box a long time ago so all hidden files are not hidden. I am using Windows95. Can I delete these files. Please help if you can. Many Thanks. Norman |

Hi chalton,
What application are you using? I use Easy Cleaner by Toni Arts. Its free and never had a problem letting it remove files. My son just used it on his pc and came up with 4.5mb of unnecessary files. Most of them were AIM conversations that you can safely remove. Carl |

You have to "carefully" review the results of any program that indicates it can find unnecessary files.
In the case of \TIF files, they can obviously be deleted. BTW if you have 8 folders there, you IE cache is much larger than it needs to be (approx 100MBs?). Lower it to the 10MB range. As for EasyCleaner, as I said, review carefully. I just ran that option on my system and it found files, that if deleted, would have rendered some of my apps inoperable. It seems to think extensions like BK{letter} have something to do with backup, and thus can be deleted. In the case of PhotoBase, these are border background files. And in the case of Brothers Keeper, these are DATABASE files. |

unnecessary files
To all who are trying to help me...Many Thanks.
Thanks for responding. My problem is that there are no files in my c\windows\temp or c:\temp or c:\windows\temp internet files directories. These temporarty internet files only show up when I use the disc cleaner utility. There are around a thousand of them. The utility shows that they are in the c:\windows\temp internet files directory but that directory is empty, as my other two temp directories. Where the heck could they be?? I am using Disk Cleaner Deluxe. Wouldn't I have the same problem if I used another disk cleaner?? |

You really don't need any of the files in those TEMP folders. In fact, you may want to reduce the size of the Temporary Internet Folder to 25MB instead of the default 10% of your hard drive. Cricket

To all who tried to help....got the answer to this problem. Right click on My Computer, click on explore, go to you internet temp file folders and you will find hundreds of internet temp files listed that dont show up if you just clicked on the C drive and went to your internet temp folders. I dont know why this happens but it does.

What version of IE are you using? Someone help me here... there was some issue with one version that was later fixed in a patch where you could go into internet options and tell it to clear the history and delete the temporary internet files but it wasn't deleting everything it was supposed to delete. I had a similar situation about a year ago so the details are escaping me. This ringing a bell with anyone?

Hi chaltun
Try this: in Start/Settings/Control Pane/Internet Options - on the first tab look for Delete Temporary Files, but Also check the box that reads "Delete All Offline Content", that should clear the mysterious (probably cookies) thousand files. I suppose a person could have a grand after a few years of surfng. Also, to fix any future trouble with this sort of maintenance, while you're in Internet Options, go to the Advanced tab, and under the Security settings list, place a checkmark next to "Empty Temporary Files when browser is closed" - that will clear the useless space wasting ad files that pile up to the sky in no tme at all. & Did you empty the ReCycle bin like Cricket suggested? Those files remain on the hard drive until it's emptied. And Cricket also mentioned "backup utility" - is this system using anthing like "GoBack"? Those save copies of a great many files, too. Best of luck . . . Gary |

Thanks Gary!
I'll try your suggestions. I always empty my recyle bin at the end of the day as well as my temp/temp internet files folders. No backup utility used. I'll let you know if your suggestions take care of the problem. |

Hey People!
Gary Routh's THE MAN!! Thanks Gary-that cleared up 95% of the matter. It turned out that I had around 2800 internet temp files amounting to 33mb. Now I wish I knew where these files were hidden. I've searched and searched. But now they're gone. Norman |
