Computer stops responding, then MSVSRG32

Hi everyone,
System:
Mobo: Intel D845ebg2
Power Supply: Aopen 300watt
Ram: 256 Twin Mos DDR266
Hard Drive C: 40 gig Seagate ata100 7200
Hard Drive D: 40 gig Seagate ata100 7200
Video: MSI GFS4 4200 TI 128 DDR
Sound: Creative Vibra 128 PCI
CPU: 1800a Northwood 512k
Modem: Creative PCI 56k
DVD: Toshiba 1602
CDRW: LG8160b
Network: Surecom XR320 (Realtek)
O/S: Dualboot ME & XP
USB: 7 port hub attached.
Wife uses XP for work, kid uses ME for games. PC plays games fine, super stable no problems, only games (all the latest) 3D Mark2001, Intel active monitor & Logitech Game controller software loaded. BUT, when you exit games and all programs to the desktop and leave the PC standing for say 30 minutes it freezes. You can still move the mouse, but clicking on icons does nothing. If I then crtl alt del I see the following:
MSVSRG32 is not responding…. I then end task (MSVSRG32) and the PC continues to work normally ??? Good cooling, average temp of CPU 35 to 40c room temp 28c (it gets quite hot here in SA) if I run 3D Mark 2001 for an hour, or play a game for an hour the temp maybe goes to 42c. I’M POSITIVE IT IS NOT TEMP. RELATED AS IT RUN’S FINE IN XP. (no freezes) Have done selective startup (disabled all programs loading on startup), tried various Display drivers 21.83 came with card also 29.42 from Nvidea.
What is MSVSRG32 ? no such file on the PC. I searched Microsoft support and found this message (MSVSRG32 is not responding) and it say’s it has to do with a “Palm Pilot” PDA ? software issue, have never even seen a Palm Pilot.
HELP PLEASE! This is driving me nuts.

This is a catch all file for events on the computer, popup messages, sounds and such.
It could be something as simple as a .wav file that's corrupted, or a message box that can't be displayed.
Try changing the sound scheme, and if you have TweakUI, use it's repair option to "Repair System Files".
I have seen both of these options work.

Just a shot in the dark because you can say you move your mouse but can't click on anything... you running active desktop? Does this happen in both ME and XP? Have you checked msconfig to see if it's something loading in startup? While you're there, make sure nothing old is trying to load in the win.ini. Should be a run= line in the first section. Do any of those games you're using run in a DOS window? Remote possibility, but they made waaay before connectivity became a way of life instead of an excursion into hell and some of the games tried to "assist" with system settings. (win.ini, autoexec.bat, config.sys... who knew those things would go the way of the dinosaur?) I've only seen that cause a problem once, but it can happen.

This is one of those frustrating little problems that is going to drive us all bonkers till we figure it out. Going along with Reboot's line of reasoning, which makes perfect sense, and with your statement that it only happens when the computer's been left sitting for about 30 minutes, it's got to be a timed event, not necessarily power management though it's behaving much the same. Some hardware has power save settings that are supposed to override the OS power management, (routers, monitors, etc.). Anything like that attached to the system? Any background/screensaver package? Special cursor? Special windows sounds? Also, have you checked to see if there's a sleep setting in the bios that may be overriding the software sleep modes?

Funny, I am looking at the forum to find a problem i am having and I find this thread.

I have always had this problem with ME. A new format and install and the same error except:

I will only get the message when starting a program(IE). Explorer will hang forever, but if I click on another program and wait for about a min.....the problem will fix itself. Weird.

Xp has not issuse on my system but this error is bugging the Sh** out of me.

I have tried all the sugestions and it was fine for 2 days and now it has just happened again. This is also bugging the sh**t out of me as I have about 20 PC's running with ME and never have any problems with any of them. The only diff. is that this PC is running games and not Business applications. Could it be game related ?
This is also the only PC with a Intel motherboard (D845ebg2) all the other are Gigabyte 6oxt/a Intel 815ep chipsets.
Any other sugestions ?

Games can be really rough on an OS, especially one that's based on the Win95 kernel.

A suggestion - the 28.32 driver from Nvidia is rock solid on Win98SE with GF4 Ti's - you might want to try that one. I just built a gamer for someone with that exact motherboard and tossed in his old hard drive out of his Dell, wiped the ENUM key, and it's running like a champ. We were considering upgrading to Win2K or XP, but it's running so nice with 98SE we are gonna leave it alone till 98 starts to go to p00p. I did have to install a lot of stuff off the motherboard CD as 98SE (and I'm sure ME is the same) hasn't a clue what a i845E chipset or an Ultra ATA controller is.

My computer used to have the same problem. My problem was my computer didn't like my mouse. Every so often (when my mouse drivers were installed) my computer would freeze and have a black screen, then the screen would come back w/ a msgsrv32 not responding. sometimes my screen would be fine and my mouse would freeze up w/ a msgsrv32 not responding. With me it was a problem w/ my mouse or my USB ports, im still not sure (i just use standard win drivers for my mouse now)

Umm... did you clean out msconfig recently? The startup group. I'm normally pretty aggressive when I clean it out but there are some things I always leave, like still image monitor. I've heard, but have not tested this myself, that some usb mice can behave erratically if something is unchecked in msconfig. I'm not real happy with usb right now and the more I delve into it, the less I like it.

Drivers used 29.42 and 21.83 that was supplied with MSI card.
Loaded all the Motherboard drivers.
The only software on the PC is games, (all the latest) Intel monitor and Logitech Game controller software. (Intel & Logitech don't load at startup.)
GLC,
could it have anything to do with the USB2 drivers (none available for Win ME) in Device manager there are 3 green ? next to the controllers, but USB1 does work.
Logitech mouse, Logitech steering wheel & 7 port USB1 hub.
I will try the sugested driver 28.32
Thanks everyone.
