Howdy

So... Windows is attempting to load is what is meant?... Just trying to get it correct in my head before I attempt to help... And, do you get any error messages during any of your boot-ups?... Can you boot into safe-mode? If you can boot into safe-mode, then follow http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/h...S_safemode.asp to use system restore to get you back to a good start...

Good luck

Hi fugglestone,

Did the problem start immediately after you installed AVG? Have you tried uninstalling or disabling it yet?

Does AVG go through the boot sector virus and memory scan during bootup?

Does your system have a lot of other background programs running? Sounds like something is trying to load but can't (corrupted files?).

Yes, try to get into Safe Mode and let us know what happens.
