Catalyst Drivers Install..

My brother just got a Radeon 8500. The computer currently has an ATI AIW Rage 128 pro card with the latest drivers for it. Any special steps I need to take to install the Catalyst drivers for the new card? I've heard it can be a real pain when going from the old drivers. Like you have to remove lots of registry entries. The computer has WinXP. TIA

Remove everything that is ATI related under add/remove programs.. the multi-media center, etc.

After that should I reboot, then install the catalysts? I ask because if I reboot then XP automatically installs drivers. Then wouldn't those get in the way?

Alright, it's all workin, and just scored a 7145 in 3dmark first try. Big leap over the Gf3 that was in there til it died, which got a 6300. I am curious though, why are there no special ATI tabs in the card properties? The older ATI card had them and nvidia cards have them.

Did you install the ATI control panel? Is that a 64 or 128 meg card?

Also, have you checked the advanced tab for the extra ATI tabs?

64 meg. No, I don't think I installed the control panel. I just downloaded the catalysts from ati.com. I guess I'll try to find this control panel thing.

I checked everywhere.

Install the control panel that should do it. My 64 meg will at stock score 8800, but if I OC it will score 10333

Ok, I guess I downloaded it from a weird place on the site. I found it again with 2 steps, drivers and control panel. They're installing as I write this.

The computer's got an Athlon 1.4 ghz, Abit KT7A, and 512 megs PC133. Pretty good score for that stuff I'd say.

Now are you getting that score from just OCing the card, or the cpu too?

The 8800 is a pure default score and the 10333 is a result of both being OC'd.

Sorry the top score I got out of it was 10499

One of my other PC’s has an 8500LE 64Mb running a 1.4 T-bird that scores around 7000 at defaults and OC’d it was a little over 9200. So those scores are about right.
