Win XP pro vs Win2k

I have a client running a Win2K server and a grab bag assortment of workstations. Some W98 and NT 4`s. I`ve convinced him to standardize (he has money to spend for tax purposes) and had him convinced to go with Win 2K Pro. He contacted me and inquired about using Win Xp Pro instead mainly because he doesn`t want to have to upgrade in the future 2 platforms. My understanding is that Win 2K is NT 5 and Win XP is NT 6.

Personally, I`m hard put to find a great deal of difference between 2K Pro and XP pro other than the security issues of XP Pro and a general consensus that XP is "quirky". I personnaly run a dual boot W98\Win XP Pro machine and haven`t found XP to be a problem at all, in fact extrememly stable. (PIII 550 mhz, 288 mhz PC 100 sdram, 100 front side buss)

He does need to run Office XP with his proprietory software but this should not be a problem with Win2K.

I still want him to go with Win 2K Pro so any inpuit to convince me otherwise or confirm my conviction would be appreciated.

Thank in advance.

If I had to take one or the other, then I would pick XP. It is going to cost you the same amount to upgrade to XP as it would 2000. I can't really give you any reason to recommend 2000 above XP with the exception of some minor performance gains on slower systems. I also like XP because it takes Network Neighborhood off of the desktop. Given the choice between one or the other, I would go with XP for some of the above mentioned reasons and much better driver support.
