Shut down.

Hi,

recently, I have been getting some wierd shutdowns.
Before, I used to press ALT and F4, or start..shutdown.

Now when I try, the screen freezes for a second, then Im told thats its not responding, and a box with TRd written at the top appears. It gives the option to 'End Now'. Upon choosing the option, it loads for a second, then shuts down.

Its kinda annoying, as im use to the hasstle free click a few buttons and shut etc.
Also, My Real Player sometimes has the same problem, and in Task Manager is says that the program is not responding.

Wierd thing is, it happened for about 3 days last week, then stopped, and worked fine.. now its decided to make its grand appearance again...

Anyone got any ideas as to why its happening?

Any info appreciated..

Hi Zinedene,

First thing I would do is scan for viruses with updated definitions.

Did you install something new just prior to this all happening?

Nice 1 4 tha response....

This is a new PC i got off someone, and their is no Virus software or anything on it, to protect it..

The only new thing on this machine is Ripcast, so I can copy streaming musik...

Im gonna have to get some virus protection on this...
how do you scan with updated definitions?
IM presuming u need to have some anti-virus software to do this..

Is their anything I can do without having virus protection software installed?
I will install something soon, when I get round to it]

my first question would be, did you install anything prior to this problem and if so, uninstall and see if that clears it up.

next, click on start/find/files and folders C; type *.temp,~*.* exactly like that and delete anything that comes up even if it says it is a program and won`t run the app.

may help. i gotta agree with Cricket, anymore virus (and firewall) is a must.

Hi Zinedene,

When you got the system, was the OS already installed or did you install it? What OS is it?

For a nice antivirus program, you can try using AVG by Grisoft, it's free.

Or check out Wilders.org for more security software.

For shutdown troubleshooting info, try the Windows Support Center.

Hi,

Thanks for all the help people.

KHT - I did the search you said, and nothing at all came up.

Cricket- When I got the PC, there was nothing on the hard drive, so I formated it etc, the installed Win2000 on it. The installation went fine, with no problems..
IM looking at through the Windows Support Centre webpage to see if their is anything their.
Thanks for the links..

Oh yeah, whixh is a good anti virus software?
Should I go for the AVG one, or are their better ones?

Thanks for the input...
