Have you tried restore or repair with the xp cd?
you can restore in XP or you can put in the xp cd and click on install,XP will ask if you wish to install or repair, choose repair.
Usually the repair leaves all other data alone, but you may have to reinstall drivers,if you've downloaded any SP's or updates, they may have to be replaced.

Thanks a million!
