Explorer problem in Win2000

This happens sometimes with Internet Explorer, sometimes with Windows explorer.
There'll be a general error message or soemtimes a straight crash. I lose the task bar, then it reappears. But I have lost some icons from the right hand side (eg Norton Antivirus) but the programs are still in Task manager and appear to be working.
The minimised icons for other running programs ahve reappeared but in reverse order to what they were before.
Any ideas why this happens? It has puzzled me for some time.

Hi jash,

What kind of computer is this...home built or a store bought PC?

Is it new or old?

How long has that installation of Win2000 been on there?

Can you provide the system specs?

What kind of background programs are running on the system?

All drivers up to date?

Did you install anything new lately (hardware or software)?

What does the error message say?

Originally bought from Mesh running Win98SE. I've updated to Win2000, added an extra disk drive, DVD, CD writer, upped memory to 256, changed to video board to an ATI All-In-Wonder (though the TV input isn't working properly there)

Is it new or old?
Base machine is 28 months old

How long has that installation of Win2000 been on there?
This installation about 8 months.

Can you provide the system specs?
AMD 100Mhz, AWARD BIOS v6.0
OS Name Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 3 Build 2195
How much more is needed?

What kind of background programs are running on the system?
Rather more than I expect:
Norton antivirus, firewall, some nikon software, Touch manager for keyboard which causes problems from time to time, Microsoft mouse (actually two mice conected), some other programs I have not researched.

All drivers up to date?
Not sure

Did you install anything new lately (hardware or software)?
DVD RW, but this has been happening intermittently.

What does the error message say?
Something like; "WE has generated errors and will be closed"

Other problems on my systemn which have been around for some time:
WORD: this regualrly produces an error message when being opened and closes. Once I have found a doc it is prepared to open, it then behaves fine, creating new docs and opening docs whichcaused errors. I thought the problem was caused by Norton AV and that it went away when i turned off the 'scan when opening office documents' option: but that was too simplistic.
Total system crashes occasionally when using the web. It happens when I'm updating auctions on ebay - not every time, but every now and again.

Check to see you have the latest drivers W2K for your hardware and have installed all the necessary W2K Service Packs. Make sure you have the latest updates for Office.

If that doesn't improve the situation, backup your data to another partition or CD-R, and then perform a clean install of W2K.

Then reinstall the latest W2K drivers and Service Packs again.
