motherboard drivers

HI ! A friend of mine gave me a packardbell desktop computer, and i want to upgrade it to win98 or Me. coz its win 95. the problem is he lost the driver cd. i want to format it to make a clean
install . I try to look what kind of motherboard it is to find which driver i need to upgrade the motherboard driver and to search in web, but there is no kind of type of this motherboard. try to contact packard bell support but not mail back it yet.

Hi Chips,

Win98 should already have the chipset drivers in it's driver database (probably INTEL TX, LX or BX). Just use the MS Windows Bus Master Driver for DMA support (this is in Win98 already). Unless the motherboard has everything else on-board, that should be all the drivers you need.

If the motherboard does have on-board sound, NIC, video...then you'll have to chase these down, but you could get lucky and Win98 may already have the drivers in it's driver database.

You'll want to increase the RAM if possible. 32MB for Win98 is a little too little. 64MB would be good and 128MB would be even better.

If you have the case open sometime (or if it's still open now), see if it's an Intel 440BX marking on the chipset. Then look to see if there are 3 ISA, 4 PCI, 1 AGP, and the Slot 1 for the P2 cpu cartridge = that might be the Packard Bell Tacoma 1.2a board that shipped in Symphony-MultiMedia boxes in Europe. If you see 1 ISA, 3 PCI, and the Slot 1 (with no AGP) = that might be the Bora Pro motherboard. Both boards were Intel 440BX based.

If you look at Packard Bell's UK site, under Product Range for the Symphony-MultiMedia - they have a listing under "Core" for both the Tacoma and Bora Pro boards. And you can find drivers in there, too. The Bora Pro is a particularly interesting board, it has onboard Voodoo3 video and onboard Creative 1373 audio.

Probably the easiest way to find what parts your system is made of is to download and run BelArc Advisor (a free download). Here's the link:

A lot of information can be had from Device Manager, too [Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager in Windows 95]

Like Cricket said, depending on what motherboard you have, the Win98 (and especially the Win98 2nd Edition) disk might have most of the drivers you'll need. If it turns out you have the Bora Pro Intel 440BX board, you'll might need to find the drivers for the VooDoo3 onboard video & Creative 1373 onboard sound (the onboard Voodoo3 is fairly rare). There are drivers on the UK site.
