Question Boot up Question??????

Was wondering if anyone knew of a resource or could tell me what steps happen with a computer or the sequences a computer goes through when you boot-up; both hardware and software. For example, loading of Cmos then to auotexec and config.sys then windows startup.....etc....... The reason I ask is that I really am not sure when certain thinks load as you go into windows before you get to your desktop........ Any help would be greatly appreciated....... I am presently running Win98SE....

Also, do different version of windows load the same or does it vary by platform???

Thanks...........

are you trying to speed things up or what?
if yes just go to the RUN line and type msconfig and just uncheck what you dont want to start up

I am not trying to speed up at this time... It is just when on 1 system when I get to log-in screen my mouse cursor sticks with the hourglass and sometimes I have to reboot to get passed it so I can log in......Also I am interested in understanding what the process is when Windows 98 is loading up........

i would say check the start-up files to see what is starting up when the computer does,,,msconfig,,

as far as understanding the boot process, dont know the specifics, just read through that link it does show some of the processes.

when was the last time you defraged, checked for viruses,,,just in case that is a issue...

Hi spmiz,

This may help a little. On startup, hold the Ctrl key down to get the startup menu. Select the Normal + Bootlog.txt option. On my box, the Bootlog.txt is a 80K sized file, but it lists everything going on.

Also, If you don't need to log on, then just change to the normal windows logon and you wouldn't be bothered with the logon each time.

HTH
