Boot up Problem

When i boot up my pc for the first time that day i wont find the hard drive to boot from, It say's "Not detected". Now if i hit restet botton it will hang on the looking for Hard drive, Then sometimes not often it will start up. Most times it wont start. All i have done to pc is take out a 2nd i had. I checked BIOS and Pri master is set on Auto detect and pri slave (which i dont have now ) is set at "NOT INSTALED". Also i wen through BIOS and check all with book and it looked ok. Can anyone help???
My Pc specs are.... O/S Win2kpro, 512DDR ram, Amdxp1700+ Pro, 40hdd, MB is Elitegroup K7S5A

Welcome to the mech Steve,

read through this link and make sure all cables are hooked up correctly and that the jumper on the HD is set to master if the IDE cable has all the same color connecters,,set it to CS if the cables are 3 differnet colors and the black connecter goes to the HD,,

you probally will here some slack about the mobo but it sounds like you have somes cables hooked up wrong,,,

Thx for the welcome Zaney123. As to what u said to try, All my connectors are tight and in the right place. Now what?? I am at a lose.

so you said you have this bios set to auto for primary.

try and set all the ide channels to auto,

will it auto detect the HD when in the bios,go to the primary ide channel,,(pri master) and hit F3 and see if it sees the HD then.

What type of HD is it?

I'll try get the HD out soon and look and i will repost... Have to work 12 hours for a few days not time just now,,, But Zaney plz check back i will repost

If the hard drive is a Western Digital, you cannot use the "master" jumper setting if there is no slave drive present, you have to remove the jumper or use Cable Select if you have an 80 wire Ultra ATA cable.
